Protien and other issues

Hello,

I had the RYN on March 3rd, so I am about 6 weeks post-op.  I've lost 46 puunds and can not be happier.  I do have several concerns and questions.  You guys are the best at answering those questions that no one else would understand!!!! 1)  I was told to get at least 80 grams of protein.  I've only been averaging 50-60.  I can not eat chicken or turkey.  It makes me dump.   I drink protein shakes - 4 oz at a time.  Part of my problem is that I can only eat 1-1/2 oz at a time.  Any suggestions would be great. 2) My second question is .... Does (Did) anyone else feel overly self conscious about eating in front of other people?  I even feel funny about eating in front of my family.  Everyone eats so fast and I have to take at least 45-60 minutes or I have pain.

Thanks for your responses.

Hey Jennifer - I had the lap band done on March 27th.  Before my surgery, I looked into quite a few of the protein "options".  I decided to try the Profect Protein Beverage.  It comes in 8 flavors and it's only 2.9 fl ounces...  so it goes down really quick.  I tried their sampler one of each of the flavors and found 2 that I especially liked.  They go down very quickly, they have 25 grams of protein in each vial, so if you have 3 per day there are your 75 grams of protein.  They are only 100 calories each, 31 mg of potassium, no sugar no fiber, no fat no cholesterol.   I recommend them highly and if you find the flavors you like you can order them by the case.  I did and i take 2 or 3 per day depending on whatever else I'm eating.   Give it a try...  its really pretty good. As far as eating in front of other people, don't worry about it...  I'm already back to work and when we lunch together...  they say the way I'm eating helps them to slow down because they know they shouldn't be eating so fast.  So actually, you are helping them!!! If you have any questions, let me know.   Good luck and hope this helps.     Jo Ann

Are you trying all different sources for protein?

Depending on how you’re mixing your protein powder, you can add the following for additional protein:

Skim Milk - 1 cup = 8 grams of protein

Skim Milk Plus - 1 cup = 11 grams

Egg - 8 grams

Natural/Smart Balance Peanut Butter (no sugar) - 7 grams

Try eating:

Light Ricotta cheese - 1/4 cup = 5 grams .. (I saw on a show where they mixed chocolate protein powder with light ricotta cheese to make a “mousse”. I tried it, and it ain’t too bad)

Cottage cheese - 1/2 cup = 11 grams

Fish - 1 oz = 7 grams of protein

Dried Beans - ¼ cup = 8 grams

Canned Beans - 1/2 cup = 8 grams

Lentils - 1/2 cup = 9 grams

Jennifer - After you try it...  let me know what you think ok?   It's not an ice cream cone  lol, but it beats some of the protein shakes out there (at least in my opinion) and it doesn't take as long to drink.   Good Luck and keep in touch.      Jo Ann

hi jennifer dr. noyan was my surgeon also. it takes awhile to get in all the requirements  in the early weeks, sometimes you cannot take all that much protein in. just keep doing what you are doing and as you get further out it will be easier. as far as your family, us moms, women, etc. we always feel the need to adjust for our families.  this is your time now girl, let them adjust to you and dont i repeat dont feel funny about it.  as they see how much you are losing and how well u feel, maybe they will want to make some changes too good luck, hugs, jacki

Another liquid protein is the Bullets from GNS - they are 3 oz, 60 cals, no carbs - 45g protein.  You can drink an ounce at a time 3x a day.  There is also another protein and it is medically used specifically for bypass surgeries and other diseases like diabetes, it is a true medicall approved protein drink which my doc wanted me to use but you can only get on the internet at CVS.com.  It is called Pro Stat 64.  Not all proteins are created equal so some of what you buy in the stores and all may not be the "good" or "right" proteins.  You need one that can be absorbed so this would be a really good one for you.   I used it for the first 6 weeks, but out of convenience I used the Whey powder from GNC.  Always remember too, you don't have to have it all at one time.  Drink an ounce of any of the protein you get several times a day.  Mix it in drinks, however you can get it down.  Good luck and I wish you well
