First week on semi-solid foods, and I am feeling heavier

For almost two months I was on a “liquid” diet (soups, yogurt, apple sauce, etc). There was no medical reason that I stayed on liquids that long - I did it because I was feeling full just having a bowl of soup and didn’t want to chance “going backwards”. After visiting my doctor, he said I should start eating solid foods.

As of last week I started eating semi-solid foods (mostly cold-cuts*, beans, mixed vegetables, and tuna). I would still have oatmeal for breakfast, soup for lunch, and my supper consisted of the semi-sold foods.

Instead of having the suggested 3 - 4 ounces of protein (cold cuts mostly) at my meal, I would have about 6 - 8 ounces. However I did feel a little guilty about eating “more” protein then suggested, but I found I was not “full” on 3 - 4 ounces but I WAS FULL on 6 - 8 ounces.

Ok, I know this may all be psychosomatic but I now feel heavier, and I feel my pants are a little tighter then before I ate the solid foods. Is this a normal sensation, or should I contact my doctor and see if I have indeed gained weight.

I would hate to start to fall into bad habits so early - especially since the results have been so positive.

Any insight is appreciated !!

Tom,

*the cold cuts were low-fat, low-sodium and consisted of: bologna, turkey breast, roast beef, honey ham, Swiss and provolone cheese

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom

hi tom  it might be all 'in your head' because you are eating solids again and the food itself might feel heavier -- but i would ask your surgeon/nutritionist about cold cuts -- especially the bologna and honey ham -- these are basically processed foods and tend to be high in fat content -- read the nutritional labels and see how they fare with the protein value -- tuna is a real good choice -- and also at that stage i was doing string cheese and omlettes to boost the protein value  when ross and i first started on solids i would write down everything we ate with the protein value and sugar value on paper just so i could see what i was eating and to make sure it was good for us -- it also kept track of protein intakes too -- just a visual to help with learning how to eat and how much to eat  good luck  i'm sure you're still losing :)  roberta

i totally understand your hesitation! BUT!!!! remember we need to get those grams of protein in and they are not getting inl via soup or oatmeal!!  and /or cold cuts all the time. also...you may need more calories to begin to lose....if you are eating the exact amount as when you came home then your body is in starvation mode and can't move out of it. although you are consuming "low-sodium" cold cuts they are still full of sodium which is most likely the reason you are retaining water...cuz i don't think you are heavier...it's most likely jus****er. additionally..................OMG!!!!!!!!!!!............i can't believe you are able to get down 6-8 oz of cold cuts!!!!!!!!!!! yikes and a half...wouldn't you rather have a nice lean piece of low fat marinaded loin sirloin steak or tenderloin lean steak....with some nice creamed  sweet (use a dash of spenda and your skim plus milk) spinach...(highly packed in protein and iron)??????  not only that....and i have to express it again...but holy cow (only cuz i still can not believe you can get that much in you). cold cuts have nitrates........terrible BAD...naughty thingys in them.  the idea is not to NOT eat forever, it's to learn how to eat correctly for the rest of our lives.  try and move on up the food chain...you CAN do it!! promise.
