Adam Goldstein, D.O.
have a friend who is using him now -- but he has to lose weight first -- he only does the lapband correct??? according to ppl on the board here who have used him they say he's great
personally i'm not a fan of a dr who charges an extra fee that insurance doesn't cover

it's the fee for his "New Beginnings" program that i don't like -- there are other surgeons in the area that have free support groups and the such -- but like i said -- that is just my personal opinion -- other ppl don't mind paying for the program
my out of pocket expenses for the surgery were $500 total -- that was psych, nut, co-pays for all testing -- and the support groups we attended were free -- of course we had to pay for the ben franklin bridge and parking in philly -- but it was still a hell of a lot cheaper than the 1700 fee
good luck :) it's a wonderful journey

I went to a consultation siminar that he spoke at so I know who he is...personally, I wasn't a fan...but mostly because he's dead set nasty against RNY and considers Lap-band superior. Since I wanted RNY his demenor really turned me off.
I attend the "New Beginnings" program he uses (as do ALL the Virtua surgeons) because my surgeon is actually up in N. Jersey and I wanted to be involved in a local support group.
It is true that you are required to attend the New Beginnings program to use Goldstein and that it does cost...and yes, I believe it is almost $2000.00 (they will let you pay in installments). I can tell you that the education and support you recieve there is amazing though and there is a really good group of people who attend. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for...just as with anything else in life. Their program has years of experience and results to back up their teachings. I totally think it's worth the money.
Since many of Dr. Goldstein's patients are in my support group I will tell you that although they all seem to like him fine and are pleased with his surgical skills they are EXTREMELY frustrated with trying to get in for appointments with him. It seems he is overwhelmed and people are waiting a LONG time to get the office to call them back and set up appointments FAR into the future for fills and check-ups. That would drive me crazy!
Hope that helps a bit...If you want to sit in on a New Beginnings class or support group meeting you can (to see what they're like)...contact me and I'll give you the info you need to be able to go.

Hi everyone. I'm new here. I live in South Jersey. I had a consultation with Dr. Goldstein several weeks ago, and I felt very confident about using him. However, I have not had good luck dealing with his staff. I think the practice is under-staffed and the head surgical nurse has a peculiar 'my-way-or the highway' attitude. I got so frustrated on the phone with her today (it took 3 days to get a call back) that I think I need to find a new surgeon. From what I hear getting WLS approval is tough enough without having to deal with less-than helpful people where I'll need the help the most.
But aside from all that negativity, I am am thrilled to be taking positive steps to a better, healthier life, and excited to learn about all of your triumphs and milestones.
Thanks!
Shelby
Hi Michele, My son is looking into the surgery - leaning towards lap band. He's 22 and needs to lose over 200 lbs. We went to the seminar for Drs. Goldstein and Kipnis. I called Dr. Goldstsein's office over 2 weeks ago to make an initial appointment and they haven't gotten back to me yet. I called Dr. Kipnis' office and we have an appointment tomorrow. We also went to see Dr. Ing. AJ did not like him at all. He was very abrupt in the meeting - stopping me from asking questions until he had finished an informal presentation. Then he told AJ - who is 6'4" and 410 lbs - that he should weigh 170 lbs. That's never happening - AJ is fine with going down to 230 - which seems right for him. HE also told AJ that with the amount of weight he has to lose he should do the gastric. I have since gone onto sites and found people who had to lose more who had lap band and they're perfectly happy. Basically we felt handled and he didn't offer any support services - even any you have to pay for. I'm sure there are other prople who have felt much better about their initial consults with Dr. Ing. We are going to Dr. Kipnis.
Hi Shelby...
Just wanted to encourage you to see if there is another surgeon you'll feel as comfortable using...if you're having these kinds of issues getting through to them prior to surgery what kind of help do you think you'll have after they've performed the surgery? (besides for all the headaches with insurance and approval in between)
I know it sounds like I'm bashing Goldstein...and in truth, I didn't particularly like him at the seminar...(like I said, mostly because he was so against RNY) but I couldn't really care less who anyone chooses to use...I just keep hearing so much about how difficult it is to deal with his staff and scheduling...you're about to imbark upon a LIFE-LONG relationship with this surgeon (especially since we're talking lap-band here)...if you're getting a bad feeling now I'd run.

Thanks, Heather. This is helpful. I would like to sit in on the New Beginnings support group. Please give me the information. I went to his seminar last evening. There was another surgeon there Dr. Kipnus (I think) who was more in favor of the gastric bypass but does perform both. Are there any other surgeons in the area that have a good reputation regarding lapband surgery. Thanks. Michele
