Good Morning,  My surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 17th.  I am sooooo excited.  I just found out yestarday and during the night thought of some questions.  If anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.  I have having gastric bypass. #1 - I had heard that you have to be on liquids a week before the surgery - Is this true?  #2 - The surgery will be in Saint Clare's hospital.  Has anyone had their surgery done there? Thanks and have a great day!

I had my surgery at St. Clare's in Dover.  The hospital was very good.  As for the liquid diet, it depends on your surgeon.  My surgeon does not make it a blanket requirement and I did not have to do one except for the day before the surgery.  I do believe if you gain a certain amount of weight he may have you do one before surgery but do not know for sure as it was not an issue for me.  Good luck with your surgery.

YOUR pre op diet depends on the doctor.  my doctor just had me on light foods two days before and liquids the day before. good luck with your surgery, jacki

Good morning to you, My surgeon only requested that I not eat just liquids the day before the surgery.  Like everyone said it depends on what your surgeon wants.  You will need to ask him. I will be praying for you on the day of your surgery, and continued success on your journey.

Its true that every surgeon is different. Mine didn't require any dietary restrictions, not even the night before. I just wasn't allowed to have anything after midnight. I was a little worried, so I stopped eating at 7 pm (12 hours before surgery.) Best of luck!

good luck to you on st pats day :)  if you should be on a liquid diet at any time prior to surgery then your surgeon will let you know -- always follow what your surgical team's protocol is -- each and every one is different  there are basic rules to follow  *eat real slow *chew chew  chew your food til you can't chew it anymore *limit caffeine -- it will dehydrate you *you shouldn't drink a 1/2 before or after a meal -- it will either fill you up or push the food thru *drink plenty of fluids *try to exercise at least a 1/2 hour a day -- walking is exercise  *protein first - it is possible to get all your protein from food and it is recommended that you get it all from food and not suppliments i'm sure you are runnning into a bunch of emotions -- trying to get everything in the house set up for your upcoming surgery -- try to slow down -- let someone else do the dishes and laundry -- you will be back up and running in no time  just keep in mind that all surgeons are different -- listen to your own --they have your medical records and know what is best for YOU  good luck roberta

I want to thank everyone for their advice.  I am having my pre-op visit with the doctor on Friday.  I spent all day today trying to schedule the psych visit, nutritional consults and cardiac clearance.  I think my head is spinning right now.   Thanks again for your help.

Everyone gave you great advice.  How did your appointment go on Friday?  Hope all is well! Your head will probably be spinning for quite some time....that's OK, but try to stay focused on what is really important and don't get all tangled up if the floor isn't mopped before surgery.  A dingy floor never killed anyone when they came home from the hospital. Best of luck! Pam
