Thank you all for the warm welcome! I am getting used to the feel of the boards here so if I mess something up I apologize in advance. How do I get my pic to post along with my posts? I have one uploaded on my profile but it doesn't show up anywhere else.  I am really starting to get nervous about the surgery. I am going back and forth. One minute I know it is the answer and the next I feel very selfish and wonder if I have REALLY tried hard enough to lose the weight on my own. I know I will have it done but can't quite figure out why I am getting the jitters. I was so afraid of not getting approved and now that I am I feel like I am chickening out! How many of you did the protein shakes 2 weeks before the surgery? I started them yesterday and to be honest I am having a tough time with it. The shakes really are not good and I am not too thrilled with shakes to begin with. I don't care much for sweet stuff and something sweet 3 times a day just makes me want to gag! I have a ton more questions but I don't want to overwhelm anyone all at once. Thanks again! Dimple

Pre surgery fears are completely normal and you are experiencing them.  I did a phenomenal job of hiding my fears to myself - kept myself occupied with working extra hours and what not.  And then the day of surgery i had a complete melt down.  I didn't want to go in.  I cried and cried and cried.  I wouldn't reccommend that to anyone!  In one of my support group meetings the leader offered this advice (to late for me, however)  To remember, no matter HOW scared you are - remember that you made this decision BEFORE the fear set it.  You made it when you were "sane" and your emotions were not in control, your head was. I did not have to do the protein shakes before surgery.  HOWEVER, I had gained weight and my surgeon would have cancelled me, so I did go on a full liquid diet on my own.  I had basically sf/ff puddings, sf/ff yogurts, sf/ff fudge pops, low fat/low sodium/low carb soups, ricotta cheese (Ok this isn't a full liquid, but close enough)  I allowed myself an occassional meal (like 2 x week and it was healthy decisions)  It was tough. Don't worry so much about protein shakes - yes, you will need them after surgery - but your tastes COMPLETELY change after surgery. So don't stock up on something you like now.  Because after surgery you may hate it.  Speaking of which the following are my fav brands:  Unjury (their protein chicken broth is AWESOME) and any of the flavors from www.allthewhey.com  On that site, click on the left hand side under "bariatric"  They give you a list of protein powders.  Their flavors are unique and quite yummy. For your pics....I don't know if this will help...go to "My OH"  Click on "My Profile"  Right above your picture it will have "Customize profile"  On the top of the new window that opens, towards the middle there will be "Change my avatar"  Then you can browse your computer and put the picture in that you want.  There's another way to do it as well if that doesn't work. When you are looking at the message board, on the left hand side you will see a few options.  Go to "user settings"  The first box says "my Avatar"  Again, you can browse your computer and put in your photo.  I hope one of these two things works for you. Remember, ask away! Pam

I am new too. I am going crazy with the pre-surgical requirements. I have had so many tests so far and can't seem to ever get done. Could be my age (59). I am hoping to have surgery by end of March. You're very lucky to be through all the testing and have a date. I am a nurse so maybe I could help with some basic questions and thoughts. Best of luck, Dotti

Thank you for the quick replies guys! It takes a while for mine to post because I am still new and the moderators need to read over the post first I gather. I wanted to add that I am having the Laprascopic GB. I really am struggling today with not eating. I am having headaches and just generally not in a good mood! I too gained weight since my initial consult with the surgeon. I gained about 20 pounds but since I started with a fairly low BMI (compared to what many start with) my surgeon was not overly concerned.  How quickly can I expect to lose weight after the surgery? I have PCOS as well and have read quite a bit on their boards. It seems like the surgery has done wonders for most but there are still some that are struggling even after surgery. I am fearful this will be me.  How long after surgery were you back to feeling fairly normal physically? I have four kids and need to be on my toes as soon as I can manage. Thanks again for all your time! Dimple

Hi There, We all lose weight at a different pace, so I can't say how much exactly you will lose.  It also depends where you start at.  I am 5.5 months post op, was 364 the day of surgery and as of today have lots 99.5 lbs!  I also lost 26 pre-op.  I lost the most in the first month, 30 lbs, and have lost about 15 lbs/month since then.  I had a few week or 2 stall here and there, but seem to be losing consistenly.

Some people bounce back pretty quickly from surgery and others take a little longer.  I ended up taking 3 weeks off of work.  Originally planned for 2, but I was so sore and tired.  It is kind of an individual thing.  I don't have any kids to take care of, but I am sure I could have done it if I had to.  I was lucky and live next door to my mom, so her and my husband took turns taking care of me. The first week was the worst....I could not get out of the recliner without some help, and needed someoen to at least stand in the bathroom while I was showering to hand me shampoo and stuff since I could not bend over.  I was still tired after 3 weeks, but soon got my energy back and was feeling more like myself.

Ask away, there is always lots of good advice!

Jenn
