I ALSO HAVE HORIZON NJ HEALTH COVERAGE(MEDICAID) AND LIVE IN THE MIDDLESEX COUNTY AREA. I AM LOOKING AIMLESSLY FOR A BARIATRIC SURGEON THAT TAKES THIS INSURANCE. I AM A RACE AGAINST TIME AND NEED SOMEONE ASAP. IF ANYONE HAVE ANY UPDATED LISTINGS OF A SURGEON WHO ACCEPTS MEDICAID, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE THEIR POST.

Hello, I'm in South Jersey, Near the northern entrance to the Atlantic City Expressway. I had an initial visit with Dr. Manigat, (a little twisted having a bariatric surgeon with a name sounding like a delicious Italian dish). I have straight medicaid, and he accepts it as well as medicare. We were informed that they would not pay for a surge-tech fee of $500.00 which Lourdes insists upon. There was another non-covered fee of $1,650.00 for what is called their *bariatric program fee. This includes a nutritionist (I believe has specific study for bariatric surgery), facilitators, a mental health specialist, and a case manager.

The program also includes group sessions for personal interaction, continuing education, product samples, and nutritional supplements. *

Everything between the asterisks are verbatum from their literature.
I have my own mental health people, and am not interested in some of the other things.
My question is, is this typical? No matter where you go, if you're on medicaid, do you have to come up with the $1,650.00. I can see the surge-tech. This is like three months worth of my benefits.  I'm wondering if they are going to try and charge me for the initial visit.  Anyone??? thanks, idnelle

I read in a magazine article in my doctors office just last week (the magazine was current) that CMS (The Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services) hasn't approved gastric bypass yet which means they don't recognize it as "approved" to be reimburseable under Medicare at this time (I don't know about Medicaid) . So, unfortunately even if there are Medicaid or Medicare participating physicians out there, if they perform bariatric surgery, Medicare will not cover the procedure.  Hopefully soon this will be approved service as reimburseable under Medicare.  I know there is a panel of dr's working on getting this approved.  Hope this helps!

This is not true.  Effective either 2006 or 2007, Medicare started covering Weight Loss surgery.  You just have to have certain comorbitities.  I had my surgery in October 2008 and it was paid for by Medicare at 80% and my Medicare supplemental plan paid the other 20%.  I didn't pay a penny.
