Thanksgiving

A traditional thanksgiving is nothing without the stuffing.  Stuffing of both the bird and yourself. Why not take the NO STUFFING PLEDGE! Seriously, what are your thoughts and strategies for the holiday? Dr. Mike

I have a little bit of a different situation. Not only am I a WLS patient, I'm also a vegetarian. My Mom does not change her food to suit me (and I've never asked her to) so most of it I won't eat anyway.

Since the holiday is more about being with family, I will go my my Mom's early in the day and be with my family and my partner will go by her Mom. Later on, I will go home and me and my partner will have our Tofurky dinner. I'll have more control that way and we will enjoy our vegetarian feast and WLS friendly pumpkin pie.

Hi Dr. Mike, I will be the one cooking for my family.  So every year for some reason after cooking everything I loose my apetite.  If I do get hungry I will eat the meat and veggies.  I am learning how to eat in moderation now because of the surgery.  So I won't be able to over indulge anyway. I will not stuff myself, but I will enjoy a tiny bit (just a taste) of stuffing.  Did you know that stuffing contains all the food groups:  meat, dairy, vegetables and fruit, grain, and fats.

we will be with friends for turkey day -- and i do pretty good with staying within my own limits -- ross on the other hand -- well i can't speak for him -- i'll just have a small plate like i always use -- and football will be on anyways!! but i'm sure i'll just pick here and there -- but make sure i eat the turkey first -- and then some squash -- then some cranberry sauce -- then i think i'll be done with everything i like -- maybe some boiled onions  the day after we are having a family get together -- we are having meatballs in one slow cooker and sausages in the other slow cooker with pasta for everyone but me -- i know that pasta makes me sick -- so i'll stick with the sausages -- and plenty of gossip :)  i'm looking forward to spending time in boston more than i'm looking forward to the food -- bring on the friends and football!! roberta

It is wonderful to see how many of your posts stress family and friends rather than food I'm sure that for many the thanksgiving meal has been the start of one long eating binge that goes all the way past New Years Day........ What can prevent this? awareness  leads to change Dr. Mike

and for some it's the start of one LONG family argument ;)  what can prevent both ------ walk away -- just smile and walk away -- as an adult you have choices to make -- you can stand there and eat all day or you can walk away -- you can stand there and argue with the idiot or you can walk away --only you can make the choice of what you are going to do  roberta

Great advice Roberta. I couldn't agree more. I actually have a planned walk away. Mom already knows how long I will be by her house and when I am leaving. Saves a lot of hard feelings that way (I hope).
