Protein Shake Suggestion for newbie

I am still kinda new to this forum, so please excuse me if the following question has been asked a million times.

I just had my meeting with the Nutritionist, and she stated that drinking protein shakes with Whey is a requirement. She gave me a list of different companies, and suggested I try them to see which I like. She also stated that some companies will send “samples”, if you contact them.

I was wondering which Protein shake you recommend, and if you know of any company that does indeed send samples.

Yes, I understand everyone’s tastes are different – however if a consensus stay I love Brand Y and Brand Q is disgusting I will know what to and not to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks in advance to those who answer !!  Tom from NJ !!

Hi Tom, There are a lot of different protein shakes, but the one I liked the best is 50 Gram Slam from GNC.  It comes in three Flavors Vanilla, Chocolate, and Cookies and Creme.  You can go to any GNC and buy it in person.  It has 50 grams of protein in each can you don't have to do any mixing, Just shake it up and drink.  When I first had my surgery I bought Sportspharma at Cosco(Whey Protein) It is a powder so you have to mix it with either water or skim milk, but I hate the powder because it doesn't taste that good went you have to mix it up yourself.   - the price for (1) can of the 50 Gram Slam is Between 3-4 dollars - If that is too expensive - the Sportspharma at Cosco is $26.00, the bag is gigantic and will last you a couple of months.   I hope my suggestions were helpful.  Good-Luck!! hi tom and welcome to the nj board :)  i turned melissa onto the 50 gram slam from GNC -- my husband on the other hand gets all his protein from food -- which is what our nutritionist recommends -- i suppliment only because i don't eat breakfast  did your nut suggest how long you should suppliment for?? is it only for the liquid phase??  there is no right or wrong answer to your question -- but some things to keep in mind yes everyone is different  taste can change after surgery -- what  you like now you might not like the day after surgery  do not buy alot of anything -- most of it will go to waste  ask on the boards and maybe someone will send you some samples that they never used - that would be the cheapest way :)  good luck to you and ask any question you have :) someone here has an answer for you  roberta

>> did your nut suggest how long you should suppliment for?? is it only for the liquid phase?? << That's a good question. I swore this was all the time, but now I am rethinking this. While my nutritionist  was a great, after a while so many things were being said, I may have missed the more important details – such as this. I have looked over the packet she gave me, and it's not clearly stated. I will definitely have to contact her again and ask.

hi tom welcome to the NJ boards i like unjury protein powder which i purchase online, just go to unjury. com it comes in choc and vanilla, and they also have a chicken broth, which i hear is good, although i never used it. i would mix the choc or vanilla with milk (with a spoon no blender needed) and then would add my morning coffee (decaf) to it slowly and just continue mixing with spoon. there are many other choices, and vitalady.com sends samples from what i hear also bariatriceating.com sells a sample pack, some have tried that. good luck, jacki

Thanks Jacki,

You are the second person to mention both Vitalady.com & Bariatriceating.com, so I will definitely check them out.

Tom, I agree, don't buy a lot of anything - and be prepared to love something before surgery and gag on it after surgery. My current fav combination:  Nectar brand cappuchino protein powder w/ skim plus milk and one envelope chocolate carnation no sugar added instant breakfast:  39gm protein (the skim plus milk has 11gm protein in 8 ounces, the nectar has 23gm protein per scoop, and the carnation instant breakfast has 5gm) I will look into another website - I can't remember if I ordered from bariatric eating or not - but one of the places I ordered from had a sample pack whi*****luded flavors such as orange creamsicle, banana split, chocolate mint. Good luck! Pam

Pam, Thanks for the great advice - especially not to buy large quantities of one item - especially if there is a chance I will dislike it AFTER surgery.
