my fear post op was a blood clot  i was/am very confident in my surgical team  i did research the surgery and the results  i did research the post op diet - first 3-5 months i made sure i got opinions on all types of surgery  i wanted to know how this surgery (rny) would affect my Hep C - i had just gone through 28 weeks of treatments so my only fear was of a blood clot and the surgeon told us that it could happen within 6 months of surgery -- so just because i was out of the hospital and on my way to healthier lifestyle there was still the risk of a blood clot for about 6 months post op  everything else was a non-issue because i  felt as though i was very well prepared for surgery  Roberta

Pre-op.. I didn't fear dying and not even dying in the surgery..  Post-op (Now ) I  fear the suffering that will proceed dying because dr's don't know how to treat post ops.  I fear gaining all my weight back because my brain keeps telling me this post op experience is not how people are supposed to live.  I fear never feeling normal again..

My biggest fear is dying on the O R  table and leaving my kids without their mom.

Hi All, Many have spoken to the fear of medical complications or worse, either during surgery or following.  While there is always risk associated with surgery remember that the statistics are in your favor.  Also remember that the long term risks of morbid obesity are overwhelming! So the choice is between an acute risk or a chronic risk. Having said all this, it is a good idea to talk about the concerns and to think about what you might do to increase your odds of a good outcome. While I do not have stats on the following they seem like good ideas to me.     1.  STOP SMOKING     2. Begin a mild exercise program, like taking a walk     3. Drop a few pounds prior to surgery Some of you have mentioned fears about the surgery and the subsequent weight loss effecting relationships.  What are peoples' thoughts on this? Does it change expectations, impulses, jealosy? Dr. Mike
