Hi Everyone, A few weeks ago, I explained that I keep having an uneasy feeling, and thought it was because I am eating and drinking too fast, well I did some research and found out I beleive I have acid reflux disease.  The crazy thing is I never had it before the surgery, but I have it now.  I need to know if anyone had the same situation.  It will confirm that this is possible, the pharmacist in my area explained to me that now that my stomach is so small, if my stomach is producing to much acid it will over flow into my esophagus causing heartburn, which is acid reflux disease.  My surgeon is telling me to go see a stomach doctor.  He won't help me, He says that if I didn't have it before the surgery I shouldn't have it now.  But the pharmacist says that it is very common after the surgery because our stomach's are so small.  I called my primary doctor and she hasn't called me back, in order to get a referral for a stomach doctor, I have taken every over the counter antacid, and nothing works, I have this everyday and I live with it, the heartburn is unbeleiveable.  If someone tells me that this happen to them too,  then that will confirm that the pharmacist is right, then my surgeon needs to give me a prescription for Nexium.  I am at my wits end, I even went on-line and researched acid reflux and I beleive this is exactly what I have.  Hopefully someone can help me finally feel better. Melissa

Melissa, Please GO TO A DOCTOR!!  I am not shouting, just trying to emphasize the importance of not trying to self-diagnose or use this board for medical advice.  Your symptoms could be from a number of things, from anxiety to acid reflux to ulceration to even more serious complications.  Go to your primary doctor and get a referral to someone who can TEST and diagnose what really going on.  Your health depends on it. Melissa, I have heard that acid reflux is very common with lap band. I don't know which surgery you had. I had severe reflux prior to surgery and now only get it if I eat past 8:30. So when I slip into my old habits I pay dearly. Do try not eating at night.

Hi Everyone, I spoke with my primary doctor, and she explained to me that before the surgery when my stomach was of normal size, the acid that was being produced to digest your food, which is called digestive enzymes was absorbed by the food that you were eating, now that your stomach is so small and you are probably producing the same amount of acid, and because you are not eating as much food as you used to, the acid is not being absorbed, so the only place for it to go is up into your esophagus causing heartburn, she is supposed to give me a prescription this morning,  She needs to get an approval from my Insurance company.  I am still going to go to the stomach doctor on the 25th.   When I first had the surgery about 2 weeks after I ended up going to the emergency for severe stomach pain, the doctor said that they found that I had a lot of acid in it, and gave me a prescription for prilosec otc, well I went home and took it and it made my stomach hurt even worse, so I didn't take it again.  To make a long story short, because of the pain in my stomach I was afraid to take again, well my PCP told me until she can get me something stronger, to take a chance and take it again, well last night I had another attack of the heartburn, and I was afraid to take it because I didn't want any stomach pain to go along with the heartburn, well I did it I took the prilosec and it helped me, and their was no pain!!!!!!!!!!  Since I took it the heartburn is gone it says to take for 14 days, so I am going to continue to take it and in 14 days I will see the stomach doctor.  If my primary doctor is able to get me a stronger prescription that will be good too.   I can't beleive that I actually had a good night sleep last night the first time in 2 weeks,  I hope I continue to feel better.  Just thought I would share this, this info may help someone who has the same symtoms in the future.  Thanks for your suggestions, and good luck to everyone in their continued journey. The thing w/ the heart burn or reflux meds, like prilosec, pepcid, protonix, etc. is that the need to be taken on a regular basis, all the time.  Glad you are taking it again.  It may have been co incidental that it hurt after you took it the first time - because it wouldn't have had time to work or not work in that time frame.  good luck w/ the doctors appointment and yea - you may need your gallbladder looked at too. :-) Pam
