Hiatal Hernia

I had my upper GI today and it showed a moderately sized hiatal hernia.  Will this affect my surgery date?  Will the doctor be able to fix it with the lap procedure?  I just got my surgery date for October 2 and I don't really want to change it.

I think it depends upon the doctor and the size of the hernia. I had an RNY date of 7/30 and at the pre-op class found out it was going to have to be a hernia repair instead due to the size of the hernia. They were able to do it lap.

Was your hernia large?  So they had to do 2 procedures?

It was very large.  I think I had something like 17 lap holes. (not as bad as it sounds).  Once I got over the initial disappointment I was okay with the fact that the RNY got postponed.  Of course, I would have preferred to have had both of them together but he is the doctor.  He said I only had to wait six weeks which is this week but I did not think I would be ready and I was right.

Thanks for the info.  Hopefully they can do it at the same time but otherwise, I will have to be patient.  That's something I'm not good at.  Good luck with your upcoming procedure!

I am not patient either but I also believe things happen for a reason.  Good luck to you as well.  I hope they are able to do both at the same time.

I was told that they are pretty common and they generally leave hiatal hernias alone.

Lori, Not sure of the procedure you are having, but I have a large hiatal hernia and am having lap RNY, and as part of my procedure it will be repaired. . .  good luck, hope your situation works out the way you want it to! Take care,
