Sugar Grams

I haven't even had my PATs yet at Barix, but I'm trying to be very conscious of what I eat and what I buy and reading food labels so I get used to it prior to surgery. I seem to remember somebody saying that you can't have stuff w/ 2gm of sugar in it or more.  That is very difficult it seems....for instance....I bought Dannon Light and Fit yogurt, which has no sugar, is made w/ splenda, has 60 calories, and  has zero fat.  HOWEVER...the sugar content is up to 8gm in some.  Because of the fruit maybe?  The same thing with a lot of the soups I found (more so w/ the soups I found with vegetables as the base such as minestrone or stuff like that) such as Healthy Choice, Stop and Shop Brand.  Campbells was mostly ALL sugar. Any advice?  I know I will get a whole lotta info from Barix but just wondering if I was sabotaging myself w/o evening knowing it. Pam

Since i had surgery i cannot tolerate sugar.. which i find is a great thing!  I avoid it all together.  You can buy some sugar free stuff but it does contain alot of sugar alcohol.. and in my case is the sugar alcohol is high... i will dump from that also.  I can handle the natural sugars in most fruits.  I eat high protein, low carb.  I do eat the dannon lite n fit blueberry yogurt.. its my fav.  Talk to your doc and ask him/her.  Im sure they will guide ya in the right direction! Good luck....

hi pam most sugars in yogurt come from the milk -- which is a natural sugar our nut told us no more than 8 grams of sugar per serving  i try to keep my sugars at 8 grams - but it's not always easy -- if the label says Splenda then it's for me :) i try to keep my calories low and my protein high -- and read what a serving size is -- sometimes you won't even eat a 'serving size' -- you will get used to reading the labels -- it's not all that hard once you are used to it  --i read the serving size, calories, protein and sugar in that order -- i don't read the other stuff -- but that is just ME  dannon light & fit and dannon carb & sugar control are probably the lowest in sugar you will find -- also the Walmart brand that is labeled as "light" is low in sugar  good luck :)  roberta

It's very individual. I can tolerate as much as 20 grams of sugar per serving without dumping; I try not to use anything with more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. However, I can't tolerate Splenda; I find it has a HORRIBLE aftertaste that nauseates me. I'm limited to aspartame-sweetened products, which are far less common these days. Be aware that fructose and lactose are counted in sugar grams, but do NOT cause insulin levels to change rapidly like table sugar, and therefore do not cause dumping.
