I'm really considering having the gastric bypass, but I just found out that I won't be getting state disability because I work for the state. It doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is. How long is recovery time, from the time you have surgery to the time you're ready to go back to work? Since I won't be getting any disability benefits I can't afford to be out of work for more than a week, two weeks top. Nereida

hi nereida ross stayed home for the full 6 weeks -- i was using vacation time so i was back to work in 17 days total -- from the day of surgery to my 1st day back was 17 days -- and we both had open rny -- he's an electrician which requires pulling wire and lugging wire and ladders -- i worked with adults with MR and/or autism at that time and i was required to do physical restraints -- and yes i did a restraint my 1st day back -- not my choice :)  take care roberta

Hi, Roberta I'm a high school teacher so my job isn't physically strenuous, I'm planning on having the gastric bypass. How long should I expect to be out of work? I can't afford to stay out too long because I won't be receiving any state disability (I just found that out this week). Nereida

hi nereida it really all depends on how you heal and what your surgeon says -- i felt great at my 2 week appt and he let me go back to work -- i walked -- i walked everyday after surgery -- i did not sit around -- i sipped and sipped and walked and walked -- i didn't let myself get comfortable at home -- i was already home for 12 weeks with another medical problem --i was tired of sitting on the couch and staring at the stupid tv haha so i guess i kinda pushed myself and it worked for me  take care roberta

Hey - first GOOD LUCK!!!!  I am due for the surgery in October, but my drs. told me that the procedure is about 1 - 1.5 hours, but total hospital stay should be about 4 hours, once you can tinkle and walk, you are welcome to leave....
