Hi Everyone: I have a question that I wanted to get your feedback on. This is geared towards anyone who would seek counseling either pre or post surgery. Would you be more likely to go to a therapist who spealized in dealing with the overweight/obese/morbidly obese population?  Would it be "easier" dealing with a therapist who, perhaps, had the surgery as well?  Someone who knew what having this surgery and being overweight is all about? Thank you all for your comments!!

Hi Colleen: I really don't think it would matter one way or another.  I had been seeing a therapist for about 2.5 years (about 1.5 years pre-op).  I don't think that my issues were any different than the next person seeking therapy.  My issues came from my childhood, my relationship with my parents, etc.  Food was just a way of comforting or self-medicating myself.  It was really the underlying problems that needed to be dealt with.  I really think that any therapist who I connected with, and felt comfortable with, could have help me. I hope that helps. Thanks!!

Colleen, THe most important t aspect to choosing a therapist is to find someone who you feel you connect with. You will be disclosing very intimate parts of yourself and you want to work with someone who is trained , licensed and you feel comfortable revealing your issues to. There are therapist who specialize in working with eating disorders. Many of these therapists have experienced their own personal battles with eating disorders and come with personal and professional experience. Again, it is most important that you feel comfortable and understood. Susan

I don't think it would matter to me.  It would matter more for me to find a gay therapist.
