Hi Everyone, I need to talk to anyone who had open RNY- my belly button is somehow open and there are fluids draining out of it, i don't understand.  I asked my surgeon and he said it will stop soon.  But I don't understand how will it stop if my belly button has wholes in it.  I am really scared right now.  I need someone to tell me that this is okay and when it  will stop draining.  I will be waiting for an answer, am really scared right now.  Also i thought i was have lapascopic RNY and He opened me without my conscent, If I would have known , I wouldn't have done it.  I am so afraid to drink anything I hate the gas pains, I am so unhappy right now.

Melissa, You sound scared and upset, it might be a good idea if you go have it checked out by the surgeon  in person or even your PCP just to put your mind at ease that it will heal and be ok!  Open RNY Im sure takes a bit longer to heal but in time it should be just fine.  I'm sorry your having a difficult time right now and I hope its gets better for you!  If your not happy with the answers your surgeon is giving you, and it sounds like your really upset he switched routes with you during surgery, make sure you let him know exactly how your feeling!  Your other option is as the day goes on and you feel its getting worse, go to the ER at the hospital where you had your surgery, they will have to look at it and treat you.  Good Luck Sweetie!   Maria

Hi Melissa, I had lap and open (wierd situation). It sounds like you might have an infection. I had the same thing happen, the insicion op-ened up a little and a creamy, to creamy brown fluid flowed out. I would take a hot shower, try to get the opening under then running water and squeeze out as much as you can. Try to do that at least once a day. In the mean time definately call your Dr and make an appointment to see him as soon as you can. Whatever you do don't put any ointments on it (like don't use neosporine or anything like that). If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me, or call me, I know it is scary. I was really freaking out when it happened.

Melissa, I had open RNY.  I came home on Memorial Day and ended up at the ER because I, too, had fluid coming out.  It ended up being my bottom staple.  It was infected but man was it pouring into my belly button!  I went to the ER, Doogie Howser (yes, that young) checked it out and put medical glue on it.  He said it all looked fine but there was some loosening of the staple.  I never had any fluids after that and my staples came out the following Thursday right on time.  If you're that scared go to the ER.  My fluid looked like watery blood.  That's the only way I could describe it.

Good luck!

How did it go in the ER?    Hope everything is okay.   Mine was not open but the surgeon left the belly button incision open.   I did not know he was going to do that.    He said it was so it would heal from the inside out.   He said that when they were closing it that people would wind up with infections and absesses.    I actually had a visiting nurse come for a few weeks to clean it for me.  My husband cleaned it at night.   It was scary.    You mentioned that you did not consent to have the surgery opened.  I know I had to sign something that said if he needed to do it open that he could.   All depended on the cir****tances.  Hope you are doing better.
