Hi Everyone, I am counting down the days until my surgery, July 16th,  I go for my pre-admissions testing this Monday July 9th.  As i get closer and closer am getting really nervous, I pray all goes well.  I already started my pre-op diet, the shakes aren't to bad.  Does anyone know about how long after I can start a walking routine?  I really want to do this right.  Anyway also have any info on how there first week was after surgery, far as pain, drinking, and eating?  I am hoping am not sick all the time, does anyone have any suggestions, as far as the food I should eat 2 weeks after the surgery ?  I know I have a lot of questions, I have the info, but I just would like to hear how it was for others.    Melissa

I know my doctor wanted me to start walking theday of discharge, but I chose to confine my walking to my house the first week.     All the diet driks tasted gross to me, water wasn't any better. The only thing that was wondrful was warm soup broth. I would open a can of soup, strin it and heat the broths.      Pain- took nothing from Day 2- cause it is constipating and can set up a vicious circle of dehydration, constipation, etc. Had a JP drain, didn't cause me pain.      Week 1 was relax and rest as much as possible.... I was active AT TIMES.....and make sure I was hyrdated.      I was progressed one week after surgery to soft foods. I'm doing a lot more dairy than I thought I would to get up to 60 grams of protein a day.     I've done alot more walking this week, and rested in between. Bernadette (RNY 6/19/07 ) (Edison)

hi melissa you should be walking a couple of hours after surgery -- i had open surgery on wed -- home on friday -- uncomfortable sleeping sat and sun -- driving on monday -- i went to alot of stores and that is how i did my walking -- walked around wal-mart and the xmas tree shop and goodwill stores -- just drove and walked around the stores -- didn't buy anything tho :) i was on liquids for the first 3 weeks -- lots of soup -- sugar free puddings -- yogurts -- iced tea -- protein drinks -- and that was about it for the first 3 weeks -- then i graduated to mashed potatos with beef broth stirred in to make it soupy  i had just come off major medical treatments 2 months before my surgery -- i was NOT going to be confined to my house anymore!!  so i was up and out as soon as possible -- besides, the faster i ate right and exercised, the faster i knew the weight would come off -- i was also back to work 18 days after surgery -- i got tired of being home  on the other hand -- my husband took off the 6 weeks that was entitled to him :)  good luck to you :)  roberta

Melissa, I had my open RNY on 5/25 and came home 5/28.  My nurses were a bit lax and never did get me up to walk.  Thank goodness my husband was there.  He helped me.  I was a little ucomfortable in recovery but I never really did need pain meds.  I got the rx filled on the way home but never took any. :)  The JP drain is more annoying than anything.  My surgeon said "go home and rest but walk!  you're not an invalid!".  So, I came home and started walking that night.  As far as eating it's basically broth, jello and liquids.  Strawberry SF jello was wonderful for me.  2 oz doesn't seem like a lot but it was heaven.  Take sips and you'll do fine with the liquids.  I'm 6 weeks out today and am down 45 lbs.  I still do horrible with the protein shakes.

Best wishes on your surgery!  You're gonna be just fine! * Cyndi *

Congratulations on your date!! I had my surgery nearly two months ago.  I was walking the same day of surgery and have been walking everyday since.  It helped me with the pain.  I was more comfortable walking than anything else.  I had no problem with hwat I ate except everything tasted sweet.  I fell in love with cream soups like cream of potato and cream of chicken. maxine

I was up and walking the second day of surgery just a little at a time... One slow lap around the nurses station the first day two the second and kept progressing as the days went on.. Just be careful when you get home and go up the steps if you have to.  Take it very slow and avoid coming up and down if you can.  I had my mother in law here and my husband to take care of me so I was lucky.  I loved broth soup, and my mother in law made it from scratch..  I could not drink the broth from the can.  So if you can get someone to make it fresh that would be good.  I loved sugar free ice pops... and finally when I could creme soups were the meal of the day for me.  My first week I lost 25 pounds... Now 105 down and eight months ago and I feel great.... 25 more pounds to go.... I went from a size 24 to a 9.... So just a little encouragement for you.... Best of luck....
