a question
Hi all,
When i went to my surgeons office to get my date for the surgery, he told me that right under the pouch he will be putting a band so my stomach won't stretch. he said that the success rate has been better that way. I am having Gastric Bypass surgery, has anyone heard of that being added to the procedure? He wants me to bring $250.00 with me on the day of the surgery in order to add the band. He says my insurance company will not pay for it. I am not sure about this?

Mel,
I personally never heard about this but they are making so many leaps and bounds in the area of Gastric Bypass and Weight Loss Surgeries that nothing will surprise me. I think the important question is do you trust your surgeon. Does he attend the various seminars that specialists in the field of obesity have, does he present at these seminars. Are you going to a teaching hospital? The insurance companies are the last to come on board for any thing. I am one year post op and believe me I will be asking my surgeon about this on my next visit. If it is true than open me up and put it in. I want as many tools to help me in my journey.
I hope that someone on this board answers your question to help put your mind at ease and to help with your decision. I think there is a obesity web site that talks about all kinds of proceedures but I really can't help you much with that either.
Sorry that I can't be of more help. I wish you luck and please let us know what you decide and how it works out for you.

Melissa - You might want to try posting on the WLS grads board to see if anyone there knows about this new procedure. You'll also see many people talking about the ability to eat more and more which is a concern as is the accompanying weight gain. That might be why they have come up with this band. Hope that helps. To me it seems worth the $250 if they are sure there are no adverse effects from it. Wilma
