In hospital with my son

Hello Friends~ I am writing from my son's hospital bed.  I finally got him to switch seats with me for a few  minutes so I could use his lap top! My 14 year old son, Conor, had been excessively thirsty and urinating often for the past week or two. He complained to me a few times so I finally told him we had to go for bloodwork, which he hates.... but we did it Tuesday right after school.  I called the pediatrician and asked for a script for bloodwork for thyroid disease and (gulp) diabetes.  I thought nothing would come back, I thought he was just thirsty because of the temperature change and summer starting.  Well..... at 5:45 the next morning the pediatrician calls me, telling me I need to get Conor to the ER at Jersey Shore immediately, his blood sugar was over 800.  I had no idea he had any problem at all. So, we have been at Jersey Shore Medical Center since Wednesday morning at about 6:30AM.  Learing all about diabetes, and this is quite an education.... much more than I ever thought it entailed.  I am looking forward to getting out of here with him right about now. See you all soon in Lakewood, Michelle

Hi Michelle, So sorry to hear about Conor.  You must be scared stiff for him.  I know exactly how you feel as I had a medical problem with my son when he was 15 years old.  I'm glad you got a diagnosis so quickly at least you know where you stand.  Diabetes is a disease that is at least controllable and with the family being educated and Conor testing his blood on a daily basis, everything should be okay within a short period of time.  Conor is in my prayers for a speedy recovery.  Looking forward to seeing you in Lakewood.    Fingers Crossed

Hugs, Connie

Hi Michelle, So sorry to hear about Conor.  You must have been so frightened.  I feel for you because I also had a medical problem with my son when he was 15 yrs. old.  Fortunately Diabetes is controllable.  With Conor and the rest of the family being educated he will do fine.  He is in my prayers and you are in my thoughts.  See you in Lakewood.

Hugs, Connie

Michelle, what a shock!  But I'm so glad you're the kind of mom who paid close attention to what was going on with your child!  Conor is really blessed that you were looking out for him and knew something was wrong.  There is so much that can be done today for children with diabetes and I am sure you are receiving excellent care at JSMC.  (My son used to go to a special school in Neptune and that was always the hospital children would go to in an emergency, so I t hink it has to be excellent.  We fortunately never had an opportunity to find out by personal experience) .   Good luck on adjusting to Conor's new way of life.  All the best,  Jacqi

Michelle!  I just read the post and hope all goes well with Conor....I am sorry about the diabetes diagnosis but luckily he is at the age where he can understand his medical problem and take care of himself.  I am a diabetic (still) and education and knowledge is the key!  I assume he has been diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes....will he go on insulin???  How are you????  I know you had some health issues too and hopefully those have been or will be resolved.  Write me back to my email and let me know how everything is going.

Hey Sheri~ Yes, Conor was diagnosed with TYPE 1 diabetes, otherwise known as juvenile diabetes.  The only way they treat TYPE 1 is with insulin injections.  Conor has to have 1 injection of long lasting insulin at 9:00pm every night and he has to have an injection of short acting insulin every time he eats.  He can't even have a banana, cookie, carrot or orange without a shot to "cover" what he is eating.  Everytime he puts something in his mouth, he has to take a shot first.  It's definitely a life changing thing for him, since he loves to eat, and does it often.  No more "mindless eating" (thanks to my years at Weigh****chers for that little chiche') for my son. My bloodwork came back from last week and I am FINE.  It's just my thyroid wreaking havoc on my body.  Thank God for that.  My doctor increased my medicine by 50%, I should start to feel better shortly.  The only other things that we off were my B-12, which I will get once weekly shots for, and folate, which I guess I need to buy in the Vitamin Shoppe?  I don't really know, it's hard to think about fixing me when my son is all I can think of right now.  I will figure out how to take care of him and me soon enough.  I have to remember to EAT right now, I forget to eat, which is way too easy to do when you are taking care of someone else with a bigger issue at the time. Thanks for writing and I will talk with you soon! Michelle
