Can anyone answer this question?
Hello everyone this is my first post and I probably never would have posted becuase I usually can find all my answers by just reading other posts. This one I couldn't seem to find so here it goes, I really need some guidance here. First I'm only in the 6 month diet faze that the Insurance company requires. My question has to due with the psychiatric evaluation that is part of the approval process. I have a diagnois of depression I have been on and off meds since my 20's. Currently I'm not on them but I know when I need to get back on them sometimes it's within a year sometimes i can make it a couple years. I'm getting to the point where I need to go back on them.
Will this stop my chance of getting approved? does anyone know? I don't think I will be able to wait until after approval or surgery.
Thanks for any info anyone can tell me.
The psych evaluation is to ensure that you do not have unreasonable expectations of the surgery, that you understand the risks involved, and that you understand and can manage the life changes necessary to make it work. A previous psychiatric history is irrelevant, unless it impacts those three spheres. I've even known schizophrenics to be approved for the surgery. I'm sure you will not have a problem, unless you are expecting the surgery to cure your depression...
I have been "diagnosed" with depression and have been on prozac for years. I was cleared by the psych consult with no issues. Basically, they just wanted to make sure I could handle the emotional trauma of losing weight and having to give up food as a crutch. They actually seemed to like that I was on Prozac since they knew my mental side was already monitored.
