A question for all my gastric bypass peeps!
HI all...I'm 3 weeks out (today) and so far doing well... I'm curious to know if any of you are having this problem.
I'm constantly thirsty and have dry mouth (I am constantly sucking on the Crystal Lite candies) and on top of it all, I feel like I have major 'dragon breath'...anyone else having these issues and what are you doing about it? Any suggestions? Anyone else trying to make peace with drinking those protein shakes (and that icky aftertaste) I've tried several brands and types (mixed and canned) altho I'm not such a happy camper with them, I'm managing to get them in. Ok...that's all...I hope ya'll are fine. God Bless!
With regard to being thirsty, why not drink sips of water instead of eating the candy? When you're thirsty, it's usually a sign that you're already dehydrated...
Dragon breath may be ketones from buring the fat... You can buy those ketostrips to test your urine. Drink water to flush this stuff out. As always, you should contact your doctor.
Protein shakes, I hated most of them. I made my own concoction with Any Whey, a tasteless protein and low carb carnation instant breakfast and 2 T of cocoa powder.
Good luck!
Hey thanks for your posting...I do drink the water, just have to be conscious of those 30 minutes between meals and then leaving room for the protein drinks, I have protein pudding, Walker powder Worldwide cans...goodness..and most have a less than ymmy aftertaste...your idea sounds wonderful..thanks again.
Hi I think we met last saturday. I had a hard time with those protein drinks so I use the protein test tube shots there 3 oz. There not the best tasting but there bearable. they are 42 grams of protein in 3oz, just drink like 1/2 at a time. Here is my email me if you have any questions anytime. [email protected].

The dragon breath is ketosis, that is when your body is burning the fat from a protein based diet. As soon as you are out far enough to incorporate veggies into your diet, it will lessen.
There are a few places that you can buy sample sized packets of protein from. Then you won't have this large outlay of wasted cash on brands you don't like.
Some of the places are: http://www.betterbodz.com http://www.unjury.com http://www.vitalady.com http://www.bariatricedge.com
I personally am partial to the Berry Blast and Orange Cream from betterbodz, I mix them with water. I can not tolerate milk at any level.
Just remember that your taste buds are going to change often, so even if you really like something, don't stock up on it. Take everything in moderation.
When you are ready for bars you may want to try Pure Protein by America's Best. They are small enough (1.76 oz.) to get 20 grams of protein in without having to cut them in half.
Congratulations welcome to the losing side!!! and yes I always had the dry mouth and felt as though I had bad breath even though I washed my mouth out constantly always carried the travel size scope or listerene with me. So I started always having a bottle of water in my pocket boo****ep water in the car every where cause you have to keep hydrated so by my mouth always being try I learned to appreciate water....I drink water all day even the vitamin waters are very good also propel cause we can get tired of just plain water....but stay away from carbonated drinks it doesn't feel well going down I'm eighteen months post-op and sip on a soda one time and I was so sick haven't tried it again.... only in the begining like the first 8 weeks I did the protein shakes in the morning...my surgeon dosen't really want you to rely on protein shakes only for the begining she wants you to eat your protein through regular foods such as egg whites and turkey and chicken and beef....even though I'm eighteen months out and has lost a total of 100lbs I still have trouble eating I get full really quick. I'm strange I like saltines fat free no cholesterol crackers in the green and white box. and those little chicken wing flings. and I eat alot of ceasar salad that's basically what my diet consist I don't eat bread the only bread I eat is those crackers. don't like rice anymore or pasta when I eat beef two bites I get so full so I stick to the deli meats turkey, roasted, maple and just roll it up and eat it but remember don't stop your vitamins especially if you develope a diet like mines I stop my vitamins and that's when my hemoglobin went down to a 6 because I wasn't getting enough nutrients in my diet....I take a prescription iron pill call repliva and a centrum vitamin every day now my hemoglobin is now a 10 but 14 is even better....so take care and follow your dietician rules anyway when it comes to eating everything is by trial and error.
Take care
Thanks everyone for your replies...so far so good...I am drinking my shakes, mixing my Walker and managing to take it all in...sipping sipping and sipping always...but still when the breath gets to me, the sugar free candy comes out...the vitamins are being pushed in, LOL...little by little but I"m taking them and today I walked as fast as I could around the bloc****il I can get my treadmill up and running again and eventually re-join Curves. So...not too shabby for 3 weeks out.
