I have read in people's profiles that they have been turned down due to a psych eval. The key is to going to a person who is WLS freindly.. the ones that got a deny letter from the psychiatrist were most often psychiatrists who didnt approve of the surgery period. But def read some profiles and ask around. Also, as long as you are having the surgery for the right reasons, and say those reasons to the psychiatrist.. then you should be fine.
I was denied at U of P, after waiting over 1 year for a consult, and then 3 mos. for a psych eval, the SOB shrink told me that of course I needed to have the surgery but would not approve me without psychiatric counseling for 1 or more years. He said I had an unrealistic expectation of the surgery. That I wasn't going to stop being hungry just because I had surgery. He also said that it wasn't possible to lose 200-300 pounds from the surgery and I shouldn't ever expect to since I had been fat my entire life. He also said he was my friend. I don't know about you, but how does this smart ass become your friend after 15 minutes and comments like that.
I went to a different surgeon, *****ferred me to a different shrink and was approved.
The most important aspect of the evaluation is how motivated you are to have the surgery and stick to the rules. After all, this surgery is a last resort. They want to make sure you are committed to changing your eating habits and beginning a new life style permanently. They will not consider suicidal people or anyone who has life threatening co-mormidities that will compromise the outcome of the surgery. They want to see you live beyond the table.
So keep a smile on your face at all times and stress how important it is to have a full life without current or future co-morbidities hanging in the balance. Tell them how much you look forward to succeeding at this and never want to gain this weight back.
Happy to tell you, I am one year out and down 155#, looking forward to losing at least another 100#, and then hopefully a plastic surgeon can help me with the rest.
