Are having Stress tests normal?
Jade,
If walking is difficult you will probably have a nuclear stress test. It is more of an annoyance than anything else. I had one 4 years ago before I had my pannilectomy. The doctor was an older Indian gentleman and we had a hoot while he was monitoring the chemical going through me.
I had no problems with it, but that was me.
Hope this helps.
Jeanne
Stress tests have two components - how you are stressed, and how the heart's response is monitored. "Nuclear" stress test refers to the second factor; the other option is an "echo stress test". Almost everyone gets a nuclear stress test nowadays.
The stress can be applied by exercise, or by medication. If you can't walk, you will be given medication (persantine, adenosine, or dobutamine).
Jade, the stress test is to find out if your heart can handle the stress of the surgery, and to make sure that you have no blockages in your blood vessels of the heart, and that all the valves in the heart open and close as they should.
If you have it just do the best you can. The point of the walking on the tread mill is to get your heart pumping to show the action of it.
Thats what it's all for. Your Doc (surgeon) needs clearnce from the cardiologist to allow you to have the surgery. He needs you to be in your best physical condition possible before surgery, so your life is not at risk.
It's perfectly normal, yes.
God bless,
cissy
