Hernia or Cyst Post Surgery?

Hi All: I have a question ... has anyone experienced a hernia post surgery? I think that I may have one right by my sternum (breast bone where the ribs come together- I can actually feel my ribs and sternum ... that alone is amazing!) where I have a two inch diamater hard "ball" that does not hurt or anything (unless I press on it) but could it either be a cyst or a hernia?!? It is tending to get bigger over the last few weeks ... and I am beginning to get a bit worried. I called my surgeon today and am awaiting to hear a response from him. I am 9 months post surgery ... maybe I am pregnant? Anyone with similar experience post surgery? And what did they do about it? Thanks!! Michael

Mike, Is this hard "ball" directly under the sternum? If so, like me, you most likely have a protruding xiphoid process. Nothing to worry about... just easier to see & feel as you lose weight. I'd follow up with your doc anyway... just to be sure. Be Well, A.J.

If it's really two inches across, it's not likely to be the xiphoid (a normal xiphoid is about 1" long by 3/4" wide). Definitely needs to be checked by a doctor.

Hi All: Thanks for your responses ... AJ I googled your response and it looks like that may be it ... spoke with my sister ... Dr never called back ... she feels that it is probably a hernia that popped thru near where the surgical cut was made? At worst case it cannot be too bad (I hope). Jackie - thanks for your good thoughts ... also I tend to agree that maybe its not the bone extension as it seems to be pretty large. I will have to wait and see whats up ... but it cannot be TOO bad. Michael
