I'm supposed to have the RNY, but my dr didn'y say anything about drainage tubes....did you all have them, and if so, how bad is it to have 'em removed?

Hi James, My doc said not eveyone needs them. They determine it during the surgery. If there is alot of junk that needs to drain out, then yes. If not then no. And no it doesn't "hurt" it just feels "weird", not painful. I havent had surgery yet, but years ago I did and had a large drain. It didn't hurt at all to come out....just felt a little wierd. Other people on OH have said the same exact thing over & over. Don't worry, you'll be fine either way Cissy

Nope - didn't have drainage tubes. I heard that sometimes w/ open there are tubes or if you have your gallbladder removed at the same time there are tubes - I guess everyone is different.

its up to the doc and depends on how your particular surgery goes. i had none for this surgery. had some once with another surgery and it was fine, no problems no pain when they took them out. good luck, jacki

With my bypass the drain was taken out before I left the hospital. With my revision I had the drain in for three weeks. It was closed. I think they left it in just in case of emergency. Not really sure. It was uncomfortable. It did not hurt at all when taken out.

I had open RNY in June and had NO drains, however, I had a pannilectomy (sp?) 4 years ago and had one in each side. Like another post said they don't hurt they are just odd feeling expecially when they take them out. Measuring the fluid out of them was also a pain in the tushie. Just an inconvenience, nothing major, in my case at least. Good luck. Jeanne

It depends on the doctor...mine was trained in advanced bariatric and lap surgery, he doesn't use drains and does 3 leak tests before you get out of the OR!! That's one of the many reasons I chose him!

Hello James: I had surgery last May and had the drainage tube in until I went in for my 1 week post surgical follow up at which time the tube was removed as well as the staples. It was simple and painless!! I was unprepared for the tube to remain in for the week ... but after doing it I actually felt better that all of those fluids ended up draining out over the whole week or so (and a lot was removed) so I felt that everything that was removed was better off out than staying in and since it had NO pain or strain in removal it turned out OK. I just wish that I knew about it ahead of time so that I could have been prepared. Michael.
