Protein Source BLOG osphere
Hey Ya all
We are seeing a lot of new faces here on the NJ board.... and a lot of times we forget to stress the basic four ... protein.. ..hydration or drinking lots of water... vitamins...and exercise. So lets examine the first one.. El Protein-o... or in englais.... Protein.
So... how about listing all the protein sources you can think of?
Come on.. jump in... the water is fine. : )
Here are the sources I use on a regular basis.... how about * YOU * ( yes YOU) post here and tell us about YOUR sources of protein? If everyone posts... we can enrich each others experience by learning new ideas.... and it helps to get new ideas... and vary the ol dietary intake?
Capish?
However it is worth notation:
Getting enough protein is good but more than 20 or 30 grams (opinons vary) at a TIME is pretty much waste.. your body can only process just so much protein at a time.
The rest just passes through... without being used.
Beauty eh?
I try to eat 5-7 times a day... small meals with a goal of 15 grams at least per meal.
That way.. even at a minimum of five meals ... 5 x 15 = 75 grams.. close to the 80 grams PER DAY that my surgeon said I need lifelong... and if some of the five have more then I make the 80 grams in the shade : )
And my six month, one year and 18 month blood work were all 1000 percent good.
Literally.
I USED to take a half gallon of milk... add like a buttload (thats redneck for at least 5 scoops) of protein powder... so the milk (half gallon ... about 64 grams in itself ....of protein.. plus like.. oh a HUNDRED grams..) then nurse that for a couple hours. But it wasted a lot and I didnt know that.
Sure I got enough protein....but it was a lot wasted too.
Now if I use the whey and milk I put a single scoop into a glass or quart....
(I like milk what can I say) so its not so much waste.
Most of my protein comes from food... meat, milk, cheese are my big consumables... but occassionally I suppliment especially if traveling with milk and whey powder.
Protein Sources I use include...
Lean Chicken breasts
Lean Ground beef
Lean meat of any kind.
Beef Jerky and dried meats
Chili (when eating out on the road I recommend Wendy's chili)
Milk (just a regular glass is 8 grams protein... protein added milk.. 11 grams a glass)
Whey Protein powder added to milk (20-30 grams a scoop of powder..depends brand)
Meatballs
Hamburger
Turkey
Lunchmeat ( I usually buy Turkey lunchmeat doncha know)
Yogurt
Kashi Go lean Cereal.... look for the 11 or 13 gram protein low fat kind
Cheese... did I mention CHEESE? : ))) Im a cheese kid.. all kinds
Peanut Butter
Nuts..
I also eat protein added pasta (Barilla or other brands...look for the brown box)
and when I eat pasta I add a good size hunk of cheese to it for added protein.
Well thats my input...
AJ? Nannette? Michelle? Jack? Wendy? Everyone?? Im a callin you guys OUT.... (good naturedly of course) ... post your protein IDEAS and successful protein methods ---------> x here)
Talk to you all soon.. feel free to talk amongs yourselves.... fax me... have your people call my people we will do lunch.. yada yada.. oy veh... Poof Im outta here...
Timmy Ray
hey timmy ray
good to see you posting on the board again, and i love the stuff you are writing about.
i find that much of my protein involves milk products these days. what a change that is for me, i never drank milk, like almost never.
now i find it works so well with protein powders and i add decaf coffee and make my own latte at home.
cottage cheese has also become a friend, man my world has sure changed, and for the better
on the other hand, i really cant do meat, sometimes chicken, chop meat as in chili, yeah. fish is ok and shrimp is wonderful. i tried beef stew the other day, yucko, didnt want to go down. oh well!!
anyway good to see u here again, be safe and well, hugs, jacki xoxo
I eat a lot of chicken, turkey, seafood and lean beef and pork (pork loin to be specific). I too also like milk, egg beaters and cheese as a source of protein as well as the barilla mulit-grain pasta. Not only does the pasta have protein, but it also has Omega 3, which is heart healthy. I also had made some egg salad for lunch today, which I haven't had in a very long time. When I think that I didn't get enough protein, I usually will have a scoop of whey protein with a cup of milk.

Hey Guys.....
Just banded about 2 weeks ago and I am still on liquids but this is what I plan on eating to get all my Protein in:
Farmland Special Request Skim Plus Milk ( 1 cup) = 11 Grams
(It in a white a purple paper container with cow spots on it)
Quaker Weight Control Bana bread Oatmeal (1 packet) = 7 grams
**If you use 1 cup of Skim Plus Milk to make the oatmeal thats a WHOPPING 18 grams for one small meal!!**
Then all the turkey chicken and cheese I can eat!!
And a supplemental protein drink that has 17 grams for 8 oz.
Just some of my input...hope it will be helpful to the rest of you "bandsters".
Thanks
Carroll
Hi Carroll,
Congrats and welcome new fellow "bandster". I just wanted to say be very careful with the oatmeal....make sure esp in the beginning that it is runny. I had an incident 2 weeks out with Cream of Wheat....have you seen what happens to warm cereal when it gets cold? Well when it gets stuck in your throat, it feels like concrete! (my bad for not paying attention to the consistency when I made it, I should have noticed that it stuck to the spoon) .. anyway, should this happen to you, do not panic. I drank a tiny sip of cold water (all that was on hand-wanted to make sure i was getting air) then I went to the water cooler and drank plain ho****er...only because i didn't have the chance to grab a tea bag....so the ho****er dissolved the concrete ball of cereal that was in there...doc told me I did the exact correct thing to do. Just wanted to share because that is pretty scary when it happens. (i also had incidents with a piece of meatball and then with tuna. Beware of the "heavy" meats)
Take care,
Barb
Timmy Timmy! Yet again another great post! I've printed everyone's responses, as we could all use some new ideas. I've been known to get stuck in a rut with my protein, so it's refreshing to see other people's input on the subject.
Let's see...for me, my sources for protein intake are:
Cottage cheese
Sashimi (sushi without the rice!)
Broiled fish as well...salmon, scallops are my faves!
Almonds (and not the honey roasted ones either! good ole, all natural is best)
AchievOne Mocha Java protein coffee drinks (hello, my name is Wendy, and I'm addicted to AchievOne!)
Wendy's Chili (but of course!)
Refried beans
String cheese, cheddar cheese, love cheese!
Meat (I'm a total carnivore!)
My blended protein drinks consisting of milk and Creamy Vanilla Zero Carb Isopure
Elite Oats 'N More Instant Oatmeal Apple Spice...34g protein in each packet
In a pinch, if I'm on the road and can't sit down to eat something, I have Myoplex Lite Nutrition Bars (15 grams of protein) or South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bars (10g protein)
Tuna
Eggs
Revival Baked Soy Protein Chips - great flavors, great crunch, 7g protein
That's my list, and I'm sticking to it!
Chat with you soon!
Hugs,
Wendy
Meat. Then meat. Then more meat.
I recommend:
Buffalo
Osterich
Chicken
Tuna
Salmon
#1 source?
Calf liver.
Yea..liver...the only organ meat I recomend. Yes, organ meats are fatty, but calf liver with onions is just amazingly good for you. I can't eat it around my family and can only get it at a good diner, but..it rocks
Try to avoid ground meat and use cubed meat in chili and stew.
That aside, I start everyday with two scoops of ON chocolate whey over some sort of cereal (oatmeal or my new passion Weetabix ) Makes it all kinda like count chocula and I can skip the fat and calories from milk.
16 months out and I get 200 to 300g of protein per day. I worship the stuff. ;)
Hey Chris! How are you!
I agree on the calf liver...my grandmother used to make it a lot so we were used to it in our household when I was little. However, the hubby isn't too keen with me eating it in front of him, makes him ill! Same thing with chicken livers/pate' (ooh, I forgot to put that on my protein list), which I also grew up on when my mom used to take me to the OB Diner back in the day, and we'd order it with the raw onions on crackers...hubby calls it cat food!
Quick question for you...where do you get your buffalo and ostrich meat? Local butcher or a supermarket? I used to get ostrich meat shipped directly to my house from a friend of mine that owned and operated an ostrich farm down south, but she sold the business, and I don't get it anymore. Need a good source, love the stuff. Let me know when you get a chance!
Hope to see you at group on Friday!
Hugs,
Wendy
