Could anyone tell me if lapband patients get medical id jewelry? If so what kind is it? What should it say? Where do you get it? What does it look like? I have heard of getting a card from the doctors office. Also what are "nsaids" it might be stupid of me to ask, but I'm not sure. Thanks to you all!!! Bridget k.

Hello Bridget.. welcome to the NJ board !! I am not a bander... a lap bander... so I cant really speak *too * knowledgably (nor can I spell either : PPP) about Medical ID Jewelry other than in general... Medical ID jewelry is available from a variety of sources in the medical community.. often your doctor can refer you to a place to obtain it... Durable medical Equipment companies in the yellow pages sometimes sell it... you can even (literally) find it on EBay. Basically it is intended to inform Emergency personnel or other people of information vital to caring for you if you are not able to relay the info yourself? So as such... it depends on what you want people to know should you become unconcious. As a RNY bypass patient .... with a pouch (not a lap bander in other words..) If I was going to get that type of jewelry (and remember this is what * I * would put .. specific to the Timmy Ray).... I would have it say... RNY Patient No intubation without scope Alergies: Pennicillian, Codine, Bees It tends to have a red or silver medic alert tag...... you can go inexpensive or they literally make gold plated expensive medic alert jewelry.. its all in what you want and desire to get and to wear.? As far as Nsaids.... they are a particular type of medicine but not sure what it means.. which is bad because at two years out today... (today is my two year anniversary) I should know about Nsaids. Sorry. Be encouraged.... its nice to meet you. : ) Merry Christmas.. and Happy Holidays ! -Timmy Ray

Well hello yourself, timmy ray I thank you for your welcome and your post, but I'm not that knew to this board. I joined in oct. I have not had my lapband done yet, but hope to in feb 12th, 2007 now what does "no intubation without scope" mean????? Also: nsaids, I've now learned is "ibuprofen, advil, motrin, etc. Very bad for the small pouch. So be careful of that. I saw your first picture in uniform. Is that military? When were you in?? How close are you to your goal? It sounds like you are doing well, and sittin on top of the world with your new bride. "as dean martin use to sing" now would mine say "no intubation without scope" if I am a bandster? And my alergies, etc. Or is that intubation without scope" just for "gastric bypass" patients? My husband was part of the "toms river armory" 1 yr and 1/2 ago. He was sent to germany with a group out of there, last jan 2005 he came home last April. Glad to have him home this christmas, we are married 32 years. Well it was nice meeting you also. Look forward to hearing from you again,, good holiday to you and yours. "nobetterwomen" bridget k.

Briget, I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner. I know this isn't a good answer, but sometimes when I see 'lap band' I don't open a post because I don't know alot about it...and I usually assume I can't help. I am sorry for making that assumption. When I noticed your post/response to Timmy-that's when I went looking for your post and I'll do my best to help. When 'they' intubate someone (spelling?) they're basically putting a tube in your throat that is supposed to help you breathe-this is assuming you're unconscious and in trouble. Alot of people (myself included) got ID bracelets that say "SCOPE" (meaning don't go in blind--use a camera or something) out of fear someone would go in blindly and damage our pouch. That's not really something we'd need to worry about since they're not going into the stomach. Now I say this with all humility---I COULD be full of crap, here. That could all be 100% wrong but that's my understanding. THIS (below) I know for sure. NSAIDS are 'non-steroidal anti inflamatory drugs'...advil, aleve, etc...like you mentioned. They are bad for any stomach-not just those who have had surgery (especially for those prone to stomach issues)...I've gotten ulcers from 'em, personally. In my opinion...they won't do severe damage if taken occasionally...but if you've got the type of pain that's chronic and/or severe...you should consult a doctor anyway. I am sorry I won't get a chance to meet you at the Toms River meeting....at least I'm pretty sure I won't be there. But if you have any other questions-I'll do my best to help. Take care! Sandi

Sandi, I thank you so much for looking for my post and taking the time. It sounds good to me. Now if I'm lapband, I would need to have the same thing said "correct".???? I understand if you are sleeping and they can read something on you that tells them what to do and what not to do.. That is important. I think someone should post what should be on there do to the small pouch. Than everyone can add other things, according to what is going on with them. Just wanted to know the most important thing to put first. One day I will go to toms river support. I go to "voorhees" now. But I have sisters and brothers that live that way, and now I have some friends on here that have invited me. So I figure "why not"> it will be fun. I will wait for my surgery feb. 12th, and for the weather to calm down. Thanks again, sandi bridget k. "nobetterwomen" irish term.

Briget, I forgot to mention something....I don't think putting "No NSAIDS" is needed, because if you are out cold, they're not going to be giving you anything by mouth. Nothing will have the same effect on your stomach when given via IV as it will when swallowed. I don't really know alot about banding, but if I'm not mistaken, you don't have the cuts/sutures that 'we' as RNYers do...do you?....it's a band around the top part of the stomach?....If that's the case, I don't know why you couldn't have normal procedures 'performed' if needed.... I would suggest asking your surgeon if a medical ID bracelet is recommended (I can't spell...is that right?!). S/he would know best if special care or caution is needed when performing emergency services. I wouldn't want to tell you the wrong thing. I got the ID bracelet right from MedicAlert....I also have a morphene allergy. The truth is I don't wear it at ALL now....and I don't think it's really important unless there are allergies, etc, that medical personnel need to know. Again, I could be full of crap-who knows? LOL All just my opinion. Sandi
