Two years out... and now having stomach problems with food!
I had Gastric Bypass in Dec. 04 and have successfully lost 110 pounds. I did have complications early on and still suffer from Fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome ... constipated dominant. In October I underwent second phase of plastic Surgery to remove excess skin. Prior to that surgery I was suffering from IBS. My bowels had become increasingly "sluggish", which I attributed to a Flare of my Fibromyalgia. But then I also began suffering with stomach pains when I would eat. This was a new problem, but I also figured it was just another way for the Fibro to attack me.
I contacted my gastro doc and he scheduled an Endoscopy prior to my surgery to make sure I didn't have an ulcer in the new pouch. It was clear, but inflamed, which it always is (he has checked it about 12 times since surgery as I had many strictures early on.) I was cleared for surgery and underwent plastic surgery. I had left a message for my bariatric surgeon.. but had not heard back from him prior to my surgery.
About four nights after plastic surgery I had a return call from my bariatric surgeon. He had just gotten my messages and had received my test results. He was concerned that I may have a "twisted Bowel", so they took me back in and did exploratory laprascopic abdominal surgery the next morning. They did find many adhesions on my abdominal wall and a piece of my intestine flipped over, which they took care of. However, these problems were not in the area that was having the pains upon eating.
My IBS now worsened due to pain medicines... and my gastro doc had to order medicine to empty my intestines. THis caused me to become extremely dehydrated. I was also suffering increased pains so i was taken back in through ER to check for Kidney stones. It was negative, but i was admitted as i could not eat without pain. I was placed on Bariatric Clears for next 10 days while they hydrated me and did tests... which all came up negative.
They did put me on Nexium and were also giving me mylanta every 6 hours which seemed to help. they said "You don't have an ulcer, but we're going to treat you as if you do????"
I am eating very small meals at this point... have had another endoscopy to double check inside. Gastro Doc says it looks fine... His theory is I'm having a Strange DUMPING SYNDROME... but that would include dumping HEALTHY FOODS! My surgeons on the other hand believe I am getting ACID REFLUX (gastro guy says NO)!
SO anyone else have a similar situation? I'm totally stumped and very frustrated at this point! I trust both these docs... but at this point... they are stumped as well... and I'm just hanging out here to dry! I lost 12 pounds during my last hosp. stay... and Surgeon told me to gain it back or they would have to start feeding me through my port a cath. I have managed to put back on half of those pounds in past two weeks... but it's not easy! I have NO DESIRE TO REALLY EAT... you get tired of feeling sick!
I'd appreciate any thoughts if you've had a similar experience.
Pat,
I'm sorry...I don't have any advice/experience but just wanted to tell you I was sorry to hear that you're suffering. Keep pushing them to find the answer (nothing is worse than being sick but having no 'reason' to be)...and seek out new doctors if they can't help you.
Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
I'm sorry
Sandi
Pat,
Sorry you are having a difficult time. In July 2003, I had revisional Distal RNY after a failed Lapband. I had no problems after the surgery with anything. I felt great and lost 153lbs.
Last Christmas I began to have severe abdominal pain. The pain starts in the upper right quadrant and travels across to the upper left quadrant then radiates out my back. It feels like a spasm that crushes my midsection. In January I went to the ER with this pain and the docs thought my gallbladder was the cause and took it out. I came home with the same pain. Since then I have had GI, CAT, MRI. Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, assorted blood work, and a complete Cardiac workup. Everything was negative and none of the docs have any clue what the problem is. Bariatric surgeon thinks it might be adhesions. My pain is not food related as far as I can tell.
The surgeon finally agreed to try to cut down the adhesions. This will be done on the 13th. I sympathize with your long term discomfort and hope you will find a solution soon. Linda S
