I was planning on having the surgery, met the surgeon and started the process and now I found out that the insurance policy that my company purchased excludes the covering weight loss surgery and there is no way around this. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I do not have the money to cover this myself.

Is that the only insurance plan your company offers? I've heard lots of folks on here talk about how they changed insurance companies during their fall enrollment...maybe that is an option for you? GOOD LUCK! Dawn

Hi you might also consider an insurance appeal, especially if their are major health factors involved. Good luck, jacki

Hi Jim, I'm an insurance girl, I have worked for several large ins.co's. Make sure you see the plan documents in writing. Do NOT take the word of you employer (who doesn't want the rates to go up next year) or the Ins co, whose reps usually can't interpret their own polices. I know a lot of smaller employers are choosing this as an option because it can drastically lower premiums. If this turns out to be the case you won't be able to get around it though. I know it might sound nuts but consider looking for work at a different company. I know some who have done this. Also speak to different surgeons some may be willing to work with you. When all was said and done, my doc was paid only $8.000 for my procedure and it was full blown. Even some hospitals may help if your at a real dangerous weight or you life is threatened by co-morbidities. Don't give up though. Good luck.
