help
At the age of 34, I'm scared to death of WLS but, at this point I'm tired of being overweight. Everyone in my family is scaring me even more with their horror stories. I have 3 kids under 12 and I'm scared that WLS will kill me. My BMI is about 35 and I'm about 70 pounds overweight. My story is like most; I've tried every diet in the book. I even did lipo last year and nothing worked. I need an angel and support because the decision to do this is making me more scarred and nervous everyday. I have started the process but I'm not sure to go through with it.
Please please please help.
welcome to the NJ board. i had my surgery three months ago and i have lost 60 pounds so far. im a bit older than you so i was worried since i had developed several risk factors, such as hypertension and borderline diabetes.
if you are otherwise healthy, for sure the surgery will not kill you, but like all surgeries there is a risk factor attached. i would work with a doctor and your insurance, the final say is always in your hands.
good luck and feel free to message me, hugzzzzzzzzz, jacki
Hello,
Do you have any co-morbities such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc? Usually you would need to have a BMI of 40 or over and be at least 100lbs overweight to have the surgery. If you BMI is under 40 usually you would need to have a co-morbity to have the surgery. Secondly, being that you have already started the process, I would suggest going to a couple of support groups to hear stories from patients who actually had the surgery and not listen to what others say. I will be 34 soon and the good thing that will help you is your youth as well as the fact that you are considered to be on the lighter side regarding your obesity, as the heavier a person is, the higher the risks are. Also, the advancements in the surgery has improved so much from years ago. This is a decision that you will have to make and if you feel that this is your last resort then do your homework and decide from there.
Best Wishes,
Carla
Hello,
You have answered your own question....twice. First you have three kids under the age of 12!!!! And second, you are only 34 and have high blood pressure!!
Not to sound preachy....but you said you started the process......do this for the kids and you...no one else!!! If your family is negative about this....don't talk to them about it. (its none of their business anyway as I see it...anyone who would tell you not to do something to get strong and healthy....doesn't deserve to be in "the loop") I have three kids, I am older than you...I did it for them, I did it for me...not my husband...although he does benefit from my being healthier and happier. (lol) Do the research! How old are the kids exactly? I included my kids...even the 9 yr old in my decision, we all watched the surgery online....of course you are younger so your kids might be a little young for this. But 34 and high BP?? too young for that!
Look at all aspects of WLS and make the best choice for you! (i chose banding)--(sis chose GB) ...my older sister was negative...jealous i think because she is alway struggling with weight...so i just kept her out of my loop.....I only mentioned again to her 3 days before the surgery...so it didn't matter what she said!
If you have tried to lose weight yourself and it hasn't worked ...there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing WLS.
Yikes --too preachy??!!
I wish you all the best!!
Let us know what you decide!
I had my surgery May 2005. I've lost 160 pounds. I was 40. There are risks with every surgery, but you need to weigh the risks involved with staying obese. I have a daughter who is 3. I know in my case GBP saved my life. I also had tried every diet known to man. Failed and failed again. This destroyed my self esteem. This has given me a second chance at the life I want to live. Good luck on your decision.
