Hi All---I'm just beginning this journey (just had my consult w/ the Bariatric Surgeon) and was curious to see/talk to others in this area. I have to go through a program called New Beginnings so I'm sure I'll meet/talk to others through that support group as well...Was just wondering if anyone else had gone/been through it...or is even in this area. Thanks! Dawn

Hi im in burlington county... I read your page, and having to pay $2300 for a so called mandatory program doesn't sound right... I would go see another surgeon if I were you. The first surgeon I had a consult with had a so called mandatory program that was going to cost $1600 that wasnt covered by isurance but supposedly required. To make a long story short, that wasnt the case. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Dawn, I live in Lumberton and I had my surgery 3 years ago at Virtua and went through New Beginnings. Trust me when I tell you it is worth every penny. Not only do they go that extra mile in helping you organize your pre-operative care, but they are there through every step of the after care process. I believe strongly that with WLS after care is as important as the surgery itself. I have lost over 280lbs and have no nutritrional deficiencies and I am sure I have been as successful as I have been because of New Beginnings. Don't let people who have no idea what New Beginnigs is all about discourage you from using this program. I am not sure which of the surgeons you are using. All the people who have used Dr. Boynton seem very happy. I used his partner ( who is no longer performing these procedures). I read these boards and I am shocked at some of the things I read because patients are not adequately prepared for life after WLS and who have not been given adequate aftercare....You will be very happy if you work with New Beginnings.... Good Luck and feel free to E-mail me anytime.... Kelly

Thank you for all the replies...I appreciate everyone's insights and thoughts. I am looking forward to what they have to say (even though I have to wait for that until 10/26). I have always been a very grounded person whose self-awareness was pretty high. I know what my positive/negative attributes are. The Type A personality/confident person in me thinks that I will be just fine after surgery and won't need a whole lot of support. The realistic person in me pushes that aside and knows that I've never been through anything like rearranging my insides. Although I have had surgery before (gallbladder, tonsils, athroscopic knee), I've never rearranged my insides on purpose! And THAT scares me. And, while I know that I have a good support structure in my family, I'm not sure I'll be able to share what I"m going through with them. Mom/Dad won't understand it. My husband will have to LIVE it right along with me. My sister (although I love her dearly) tends to just throw negative things my way and I don't need that. I do have my cousin who had the procedure about a year ago, but she and I only really communicate through email. So...at the end of the day, if I find out that I'm paying not only for the pre-testing that has to be done, but also the ongoing support and the like...I think I might be okay with that. Guess I"ll find out more on the 26th. (Hubby is coming with me on that day). We shall see. Thx! Dawn

i fully agree with this statement -- I read these boards and I am shocked at some of the things I read because patients are not adequately prepared for life after WLS and who have not been given adequate aftercare.... but at the same time i also feel as though i have a great team behind me who has given me a ton of information and i didn't pay $2300.00 -- i had 1 surgeon in S. Jersey and because of the so-called 'mandatory fees in which insurance will not cover' we changed to another surgeon -- with no mandatory fees -- only out of pocket was the Psych Eval and Nutritionist at $200 each -- every thing else was covered by insurance -- and the Nutritionist we can bother for the rest of our lives!! for $200 we have a lifetime of e-mails, phone calls, and oh the Support Meetings every month are FREE!! life is expensive enough -- don't pay for what you don't have to good luck roberta
