Coming out of Lurkdom :P
Restless,
Where do you live? I had surgery with Dr. Ajay Goyal. He has an office in Hoboken and one in Union. He operates out of Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. He is great doctor and it is a great hospital. He has a great record and a great reputation. Others on the board have given you names of doctors with great reps also. It all depends on where you live and what insurance you have. Choice of a surgeon is usually a personal preference. I went to a few support group doctor's lectures before i chose my doctor.

All the doctors mentioned are great. I decided to use Dr. Jean-Baptiste, based on all of his patient's recommendations and his credentials (he got his training at UPenn, one of the best teaching hospitals in the US). One of the things I like about the Bariatric Center he runs is that the practice is still small, there is virtually no waiting when you have an appointment, the office is next to the hospital, the staff is fabulous...Kathy is a bariatric surgery success story and is now on staff full time, and Dr. J-B submits paperwork to the insurance company himself....I got approved on the first call! His support group is wonderful, you get so much info you have to take notes! I've been to 2 and both times the room was packed but yet it was an intimate setting, most of us sitting around a long table! If distance is a problem traveling from Sussex County, then I can understand your not wanting to come out to Plainfield, however, it is probably only another 20 minutes from W. Orange/Livingston. My advice is to consult with 2-3 doctors and see who you like the best. I did that and although I liked all of the doctors, I selected based on a few different criteria. You have to feel comfortable with the doctor, that's the most important. Good luck and keep us informed.
Dr. Nusbaum & his associate, Dr. Bilof - are the best!

I had Dr Onopnchenko in Atlantic City....One of the top two bariatric facilties in the state. Dr O is crazy when it comes to surgery...it has to be perfect! He has had many surgeries to date but not so many that he is sloppy. He is friendly and has a great bedside manner, and doesn't "talk about" you. He trained with Carnie Wilson's doc in San Diego. I was up walking the halls the night of my surgery. The hospital staff is awesome. I don't know, maybe Atlantic City is just a lucky place...lol.
Best wishes in your decision!!!
I had surgery with Dr. Nusbaum on August 1st. He has been absolutely wonderful. I was in on Tuesday, home on Thursday, no pain, feeling great, and in Disney two weeks later. The morning of my surgery, he was by my bedside, patting my hand, rubbing my shoulder, making me feel comfortable and confident that all would go well.
I'm down 61 pounds in 2 months, and could not have asked for better results. The staff at his office have always been courteous and helpful, and very supportive. He is great at answering questions and explaining things.
And he left for vacation after I had my surgery, but phoned me at the hospital while he was away.
I would not hesitate a minute to recommend him.
