What's the Real Deal on Caffeine or Diet Soda?
I think one problem with caffeine is that it is a diuretic, and you could become dehydrated.
I do drink caffeine; however, I did recently switch to green tea. I actually never drank coffee before surgery, but I founded I needed the kick to concentrate at work afterwards and then became addicted.
Soda has a separate issue: carbonation. THe bubbles could hurt your pouch. Also, I hear that carbonation sucks the nutrients out of your body. I sure someone could give a more scientific answer.
I used to love soda before sugery, but now it creates too much gas in my little tummy.

the bubles wont hurt your pouch, you no longer have the pyloric valve, so as such u dont have a closed container for the gas to presurize as you did before surgery, when your stomach was intact. a post op. DS still would have that problem, but doesnt have the dumping issue, its all bout the pyoric valve.
In the beginning..stay away from it. Mainly because it'll slow the healing rate of your pouch.
Once that issue is passed..then its up to you. I went for the first 4 months without drinking anything with calories. I was never a coffee drinker either. One day, coffee smelled good so I got one. Bang. Hooked. The caffine is absorbed as quick as booze is (at least for me). I now support a 4 cup a day habit.
This isn't bad though.. coffee does have a good number of health benifits..from added concentration to being an anti-oxident.
Diet soda? I used to be a junky. I would drink 4 to 6 liters per day of Diet Coke. Now.. once a month maybe and then I am reminded why I don't. The fiz bugs my pouch and the taste..well..I would say it tastes like ass, but I suspect ass tastes better.
I was able to give up diet soda for about 4 months, but it slowly crept back into my life. My Nut doesn't have a problem with me drinking it, as long as I get my water in. I drink a 20oz bottle of diet Mt. Dew a day. It takes me about an hour to drink it. I wish I could kick that habit, but I can't.
Hi Anna,
I drink way to much caffeinated coffee. In the beginning I stayed away from it because of dehydration issues...But now I get enough water in, so its not a problem for me....I was more of a tea drinker before my surgery, but for some reason, I have become a coffee fiend since.....If I had my almost dietitan hat on I say don't get started with caffeine, but as a woman who has been there...Its a vice that's better than say, Chocolate Eclairs....
My dietitian actually showed us an example of how diet or other soda effects the pouch in a visually way theyI've not forgotten....Try this yourself. Pour a twelve ounce can of soda into a zip lock bag and then let it sit. The bag fills with air and gets really tight. She said thats what happens to the pouch...It blows up and gets distended....That was all I needed to see.
I seem to be especially sensitive to gas and I really suffer with pain, so avoid gassy experiences as much as possible...My worst experience involved a glass of champagne...That's a double whammy sugar and bubbles....
