Aren't the staples inside? When your stomach is made into a small pouch doesn't the doctor use staples to create the pouch? These staples should be permanent. On the outside, each small incision is closed with a few layers of tape. The tape is taken off after a few weeks. I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy in February and the doctor took the tape off after about 3 weeks.

Cindi, There are staples inside where the pouch is created and there are staples outside. more commpnly on open procedures, to heal the incision. The inside staples are permanent and the outside staples are removed when you are finished that type of healing...about 7-10 days. Drains are also more common for open procedures, but I imagine that the are also used in laproscopic surgery. I had an open RNY and I woke up with a drain that was removed before I left the hospital......It was painless..... Kelly

My friend had RNY in 2004 and came home with a drain....the doctor I will use does not use a drain for lap RNY.
