Good Place to Purchase Protein Shakes

Hello everyone, I am beginning to prepare for my WLS. I have a date of 9/27/06. I am beginning to incorporate protein shakes into my diet as a meal substitute and wanted to know if anyone can recommed some places in Essex/Union/Morris Counties where I can get the mix at a good price. I bought some from GNC today for $39.99 (the package was marked $51.99, but the clerk gave me a "discount"). The container is only good for 15 shakes (3 scoops per shake=45g protein). Does that price sound about right, or are there better places to shop :-S. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Carl... I personally think that the Vitamin Shoppe is cheaper than GNC - I go to the one on Route 10 in East Hanover but I know you can look on their website and they have a store locator! You can also look online there are lots of websites. I have even found it cheaper on ebay for some if the shipping is reasonable. GOOD LUCK on your surgery day!!!!!!! Prayers are coming your way for a speedy recovery! Heather RNY 8/1/06 - 210/178/125

Don't know about places to shop, but here are two suggestions. Try samples of various drinks from VitaLady.com -- only $1.99 per sample. Also, after RNY you will only be able to absorb 20 grams of protein at a time, so using 3 scoops is excessive. Most protein is 20-25 grams per scoop. THe Isopure protein and the Nectar protein is very popular, though there are all types. Good luck Nannette

Once you've done your post-op protein sampling, there are a few online sites that have consistently lower prices on products and shipping than other popular sites and chain stores. I like DPS Nutrition and AllStar Health. Locally, Trader Joe's, Walmart, and local supermarket chains are also carrying whey protein products, although I've not tried any of them. Julie

Look up profiles for Michelle Curran and/or Susan Maria Leach on this site. They are both long-term survivors and have their own online stores selling bariatric supplies. They may be able to send you samples of different shakes at a reasonable price. Once you know what you want, you can continue buying through them or you can look up several other online stores. I especially recommend www.netrition.com because of their prices and S&H charges. I've read many replies saying to look in Walmart and a few other stores. I can't phyically walk or stand in stores so I do all of my ordering Online. You shouldn't stock up on too much protein prior to surgery because a lot of people have different tastes following the WLS (my own tastes stayed the sam).

Two suggestions ... Costco being one of them ... I've tried their protein powder .. it was OK considering it's inexpensive ... the other is what I currently do and that's GNC online ... plus I purchased a Gold Card membership that gives me a 20% discount on items purchased on the first ten days of each month ... the annual cost for the card is $15 (if I remember correctly) and I save way more than that quickly enough from the purchases I make every few months or so ... I think online purchasing is way better than not .... cost-wise anyways. Good luck! -Carol
