NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE SURGERY - HELP!
Ok, so back in March when I got weighed at the surgeon's ofc, i weighed 494. Well, my surgery is not until October. Anyhow, decided to weigh myself yesterday and I'm 515!!! i dont know what the heck happened to me. But now I am seriously getting myself on some kind of plan to drop the pounds, because I remember them telling me they have a 500 pound limit; I dont want to get there and have them postpone me while I drop the excess weight. I got out of control these past few months. emotional eating, etc.
anyhow, I have the Oxycycle I bought (arm bike at someone's recommendation on the BMI over 50 boards) and I've started using it, 15 minutes a time, twice a day.
Now I have to get myself on some kind of diet/eating plan, and am completely lost on what to eat. How about if I do a protein bar as a meal replacement, and/or protein shakes, and eat 1 meal a day? will that help me drop some weight? what do I eat for breakfast? yogurt? snacks - if I'm hungry - jello? I'm at a loss here - such an idiot. Never was good at dieting - obviously. made a nice salad for lunch today; and brought a nectarine and an apple w/me for breakfast/snack (at work).
I need some serious help. Will the combined excercise and eating right help me get there by October? I have 2-1/2 months! I'm so scared.
I agree with Nannette and Tommy:
Weigh****chers will get the pounds off if you stick to it. When I was 414 I lost 13 lbs the first week, and 5 pounds or so each week after. Just have lots of ZERO point foods around to eat to keep you satisfied.
I am a pro at it, so if you need help, feel free to email me.

I lost so much weight that I no longer qualify for wls, lost 50% of my obesity, which wasnt that much, but I wanted to loose my diabetes 2, lost 45 lbs in 4 months, the key is Bayetta, for diabetes, it is a new drugs that controls metabolism and promotes weight loss, it definetly does stop your appetite.
Michelle,
I am studying to be a dietitian, and here's what I have learned about weight loss. In order to lose 1 lb a week you must reduce your food consumption by 3500 calories per week or 500 calories per day. I don't suggest meal replacement shakes or bars. they are not food and then tend to make you feel deprived.
I would start out by changing from full fat mayonnaise to Light Mayo, I would replace whole milk with 2% with a goal of getting to skim. I would eat real dessert once a week. Hold out for a real treat, use fruits or diet puddings in between. Try to eat only fish or poultry or vcery lean beef. Only 3 ounces at each meal. Supplement with vegetables and fruits. It's summer in New Jersey, no better time than this for good healthy produce.
Whatever you do, do not decrease your calorie intake below 1600 a day; or your body will think it is suffering starvation and it won't let go of any weight, and you don't want to fell punished or deprived; it will set you up to fail.
If your surgeon works with a dietitian, talk to her or him about creating a healthy weight-loss plan for you. I also agree with others, that Weigh****chers is a healthy and sensible plan that will give you decent results.
Also, you need to add a little physical fitness. I know how hard that is. I weighed 480 at my heighest weight. I actually braved the pool and did water walking. it was the only thing I could do at my weight, and with arthritis.
I had my procedure 3 years ago and I weigh about 200 lbs now. I am still working at it....Feel free to E-mail me if you have any questions....
Ps. My surgeon's office actually cancelled surgeries of some patients who actually gained weight. I gained weight for a while too, and due to my other health problems, it took 7 months for me to get an approval. Thank god, I then had time to lose some weight.
Good luck,
kelly
Thank you all so much for your help.
I have to do this - I can't blow it now - I've come this far - a year of planning and researching, I am not about to blow this.
My problem is knowing when/what to eat/what. I emailed my nutritionist and hopefully he can give me a plan to follow; that, along with all of your tips/suggestions, I hopefully will be on the right track. I feel like such a failure.
Well everyone - you are not going to believe this... I got on the scale again today (something I obviously NEVER DO!)... since I've been so distraught of my failure... and I am 2 pounds less than I was when I had my surgical consult a few months ago! The crazy talking scale I have must have been drunk on Sunday when she told me I was 514 -because today I was 491.6! I just got on again, with my clothes on, and was 493... I am not as big a disappointment as I thought I was!
I have definitely been scared straight and know what I have to do now - but it is also a big sigh of relief that I did not gain 20 pounds in 2 months and didn't even feel it.
