Sherryanne, I am not bipolar--so unfortunately I don't know anything about the particular meds. But, I do know that some medications are difficult to take, such as a time released pill, because of absorbtion issues. You should definitely talk to your surgeon about this issue. Angela

Hi , I take 4 Depakote pills a day , I am getting the lap band and will need this medication in liquid form. They told me not to crush up the pills which are time released. Are you getting the RNY? I forgot to look. Patti

My closest friend is bipolar and opted against RNY due to concerns about absorption problems. She ended up having Lap Band and is doing quite well. Her psychiatrist was the person who helped her to make the decision. Primary care docs often do not know enough about psych meds to help you make that decision. She did have some immediate post surgical concerns, because she was supposed to take no drugs by mouth priot to her procedure, so she had to order some of her drugs in injectable form. She had her psychiatrist do it in advance so that the hospital would be sure to have what she needed on hand. I hope this information helps you. Kelly
