How does the government shut down effect anyone? My hubby works for the state in Trenton, was flooded out of his office last week, but is considered "essential personnel" and has to work during the shut-down. My kids go to county and municipal day-camps so they should be fine. Anyone else want to share? Robin

Robin~ I don't think it affects me in any way. I know the lottery shut down at 8:00pm Saturday night, but I don't play, so it doesn't affect me there. If the casinos shut down, that would be the only effect for me, since I do enjoy the free rooms they give me down there, and have a trip booked this coming week. School is out, so we aren't affected there. All road work will be stopped-no biggie there. I wonder if the beaches will be closed, since I do go to the beach a couple of times a week, and the kids go almost every weekday. Our town runs school busses through the summer, and it's called the BEACH BUS during the summer, it picks them up at 9:15am, takes them to the beach and then brings them home at 2:30pm. They charge $1 for each kid on the bus ride home. It's a great thing for us parents, saves us a lot of running back and forth to the beach, even though it's only 5 miles from my house, the traffic is killer. I drive a lot for my job, so it would have been nice if the parkway tolls shut down, but no luck there, they are still collecting our money!!! Michelle

Well, I am out of school since the 23rd, and my district is under state control, so it would be interesting to know how it would effect us if it happened during the school year. You do bring up a good point, though. I am under NJState Health Benefits Plan. I wonder if the insurance company is effected????? Guess I will have to make a phone call early tomorrow morning. Cathy

I am a law clerk to an appellate judge and we are on emergent duty so I am considered "essential." My judge, my co-clerk and the secretary are here at work but most of the office is quiet with judges and their staffs either taking the holiday off or staying home because they are "non-essential." We will be "essential" through this Sunday evening when another panel of judges takes over emergent duty. Then I guess I will take my work home with me as I have a lot to do before my surgery on August 7th. I too am covered under the state benefits plan and I need to find out from Trenton about getting disability for the weeks when I will be out after my surgery. I hope the state will be back in business soon. Best to all - Chris Davitt

.... casinos will be closed too, and the last time that happened was 14 years ago. The lottery has been closed for a few days now..... the state is losing soooo much money, how ironic is that? They are losing money because they don't have any money......grrrrrr..... Michelle in Brick

I live across the river from Trenton, and my sister works for Labor and Industry and is considered a nonessential employee, and is out of work. She has to wait to file her unemployment benefits because she lives in PA, and the irony is, her office is one of the ones that handles claims. She is very concerned. Last week she was sent home early because of the flooding and hasn't been back since.
