Hi Everyone! I am about one week post op and I am having a really hard time with the protein shakes. I feel like if I have to drink one more of these things I will puke. Right now im using 100% whey gold. And I also have isopure clear. Any advice would greatly help.

Hi Joe For the short term, try protein added milk (called Skim Plus,... I believe). That can be a short term solution till you find something you enjoy. Eventually you should be getting your protein from food (hey I took protein shakes ONLY for the first five months, so trust me I know) I met and married my wife on the singles board here on obesity help she helped teach me to eat for protein FIRST, coldcuts, eggs, beef jerky, soy chips, ..chilli, cheese , yogurt .. lean meat, peanut butter - all these are significant sources of protein. I ate and used protein drinks sparringly from five months to a year out. There are a lot of different kinds. Wal mart sells AdvantEdge (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla I think) and another brand they sell sometimes is XXX brand... I prefer the XXX brand because its finer granulated. GNC sells a brand called Designer, that is not bad. There are also kinds that taste like fruit, etc. Another source of protein that helps is finding a protein bar that you enjoy. Many abound, my favorites are cookies and cream (by AdvantEdge) and mixed berry by ....hmmmm cant think of it.... but its sold on www.n101.com I think? Acheive1 is a coffee like drink that is hard to find, but it tastes like a mocha or iced coffee, and its got about 20 grams protein per serving. I recently took unflavored protein drink, about a quart of milk, added some frozen whole berries that I found at the grocery store, and some sugar free strawberry syrup, and a 1/2 cup splenda (this made it pretty sweet though) and found I liked it enough to drink sometimes? Its all about finding what YOU enjoy.... thats important because if you dont at least tolerate (hopefully enjoy) then its HARD AS H eee double toothpicks to get in the 80 or 90 grams protein a day.... it DOES get easier Hope that helps Timmy Ray

Hey Joe Just an added word, I agree that you should always mix it with milk at least all the ones I have tried. From what I am aware of.... protein POWDER that you mix comes in two basic types soy - which personally I think sucks BIGTIME and Whey - which is all the kinds I listed in my earlier post. Ross and Roberta (posted on this page/post) talk about Advant Edge also, they seem to use the premixed stuff - already mixed ready to drink. I LOVE that stuff, it just gets too spendy fer me (what can I say I am a cheapdude : P ) Again whatever you settle on just be sure its what you can tolerate or like . GOOD LUCK ! and Godspeed Timmy Ray

I'll tell you protein drinks are hard for everyone.. and everyone has a different opinion. I use Designer Whey- French Vanilla. I doctor it with splenda, cinnamon and instant coffee somes times plain and sometimes some fruit. the Vanilla is easy to work with. And very important to me always mixed with milk... water is nasty You are not so far out I am surprised you are already using protein shakes. At your stage I was using the carnation instant breakfast nsa.

My BF has been searching for one he can stand and we finally landed on ISOPURE Zero Carb Strawberries and Cream. He could not stand that taste of the why shakes at all. The isopure tastes pretty good and in one serving there are 50grms. There are zero carbs and zero cal. so he found it a great soloution. We found it at Vitamin Shoppe. I know you can find it on the web cheaper but we were in search of somthing so he could get his protein in. They have lots of flavors. He also did not want one that was so thick and this one is made with water instead of the skim plus milk so it made it less thick. Like Timmy Ray said too though the Skim Plus Milk will add protein. Heather B gave us the idea to use the skim plus with sugar free choc. syrup as well so you may try that (her nut reccomended it). Skim plus has 11 grms. per cup. Hope that helps. I know it is frusterating. I hope I can handle them fine when I have my surgery next year :-l . Hope that helps.

Roberta, I would very much so be interested in any spreadsheets that you have. I am an organization girl so that is so up my alley. The isopure that we got is so NOT inexpensive. I am up for any help that we can get. If you could email me @ [email protected] that would be awesome. Fred is off of the puree stage but not far off. So far the only thing that he can stand to eat is chili from Wendy's (go figure) and lentil soup. Thanks, Melissa

It's so difficult - everyone one has different reactions. My favorite is the Syntrax Nectar whey protein isolate (taste like ice tea) and you can mix it with water. Good luck on your journey. ~Amy 242/129/goal
