The quick answer here----when you a lot of money sitting around that you have nothing else to do with!
People ask me if I will have plastic surgery after losing a lot of weight. I don't think I could afford to. From what I have been told insurance doesn't cover any of it, unless it's endangering some part of your body? I guess the RIGHT plastic surgeon could make it look good? I am curious about this too? Has anyone has plastic surgery that was deemed medically necessary and had it paid for? Curious minds want to know

hi cozette
congrats on the work that you have put into losing so much weight!!
when we first started this journey, our PCP told us to run to him for every little bump, pimple, rash, bruise, ANYTHING from weight loss or what could be from weight loss -- he said we need to document EVERYTHING - fungus infections, yeast infections, bacteria, ANYTHING!!! he said that is how you get the insurance to pay for the tummy tuck and all -- rash under your boobs, under your arms, thigh area -- the weight from your belly hanging and the pain in your back from it -- i'm telling ya's -- he said EVERYTHING lol one thing about our PCP, he HATES insurance companies -- he believes that if he says we need it then we NEED it and insurance should pay
BTW he also has other WLS patients who have gone before us
take care -- hope this helps

Hi Cozette
I was 601 before surgery, and now I have lost about 210 pounds, I am about 380 now and still losing slow. I have some huge ol skin folds, I recently went and saw the Chief of Staff of Surgery (for plastic surgery) on Staten Island....
Actually his name and title is:
Dr. Armen Kasabian, MD Director of plastic reconstructive and Hand surgery at Staten Island University Hospital.
He took one look at me and said "Timmy, are you still losing weight?" I should have known it was a trick question.. hehehehe.. so I proudly said.. "yeah Doc, I just am starting to work out and I am losing steadily just slow".
So he turns to his computer and brings up all these PICTURES, from people like you and me that have lost 200+ pounds.. saying..
"Timmy we cut out large amounts of flesh, and pull up the tissue to make it snug again, this is not a surgery you want to have multiple times unless you absolutely have to., there is a great deal of discomfort and often pain, and the healing is slow for people with large amounts of skin and tissue to remove".
I must have looked doubtful, because then he proceeded to show me pictures of people, (no faces so no confidentiality was breached) of people like you and I who lost 200+ pounds, and that had complications and infections.
Its not every time, or even 1/2 the time... but he said consistently its about 10-30 percent of people that have lost SO much weight, the complications ARE such they can be handled, even endured, but he said:
"because you started out so large, I congratulate you on doing sooo well Timmy, but with the discomfort and pain, and because your still losing weight, why would you want to go through it twice instead of waiting till you are no longer losing weight and then do it only ONCE"?
I had it in my mind, Cozette, that I would have to have it more than once, just from talking to people on the boards here at Obesity help. Well.. this doctor is an expert, and he convinced me to wait.
He gave me his card and said: Come back and see me when you reach your goal weight or even when you stop losing consistently.
Thats what I was told in a similar situation.
Hope it helps some ?
God bless
Hang in there
Timmy Ray
