Hoping to have RNY very shortly and just found out I need to have a hernia repair as well, has anyone else done both together?

Yes, I did. Also had my gallbladder removed. No big deal just the hernia caused me the most pain. From what I understand alot of people have hernias repaired at the time of surgery. I guess we are prone to them due to the obesity. Good Luck to you!

Dee, I have had both the RNY and Hernia repair, however, I was not aware I needed a hernia repair. My Surgeon found the hernia while he was performing my RNY and repaired it while he was in there, laporscopically via a belly button incision. The good thing for you is at least you know before hand. My husband was worried because the surgery took a little longer than the doctor had told us it would becuse of the repair. In terms of pain and recovery, to be honest I don't think the hernia repair added to either. I can say though that the staple in the belly button, to close the incision, was uncomfortable but bearable as long as I slept propped up. Good luck on your journey! See you on the losing side. Better now than later. 3 of my friends who have had the RNY surgery had to have hernias repaired about a year after. One had to have it done 3 times and almost died the first time cause she thought it was gas but it sure wasn't! Be happy they got it now!
