Burping up nasty taste...not my food. HELP:(

I had surgery in Park Rapids MN on March 5. I had to have an open RNY as I had a Nissan Fundiplication*where they wrap my stomach around my esophagus* twice.  Turns out, thats what caused all the problems and why I had to have it open. ANYWAY, this past Tuesday I went to have my 40+ staples removed. I have been experiencing a NASTY burping up taste, sometimes bringing crap up that isnt food Ive eaten. Ive had this about a good week now. It got worse Tuesday after I was at the dr. I went back yesterday and they scoped me, had to open my opening a bit as I was red and inflammed. However, today, the burping and crap is back. Has ANYONE experienced it? Does it go away? What is it?  I am so frustrated. I dont drink that much as everytime I take a bite of something or drink, I burp up this nasty stuff. I am at my wits end and no one can help. HELP!! The 25 pounds I have lost since surgery has helped me thinking I have done the right thing, but this problem isnt going away and Im about in tears AGAIN:(

Sorry your going through this! Is the taste kind of sour/sharp acid type? Are you taking any kind of acid reflex meds? That would be my first guess. My Motto is "when in doubt, give the Doc a shout".  Do you have a local PCP? If it was inflamed, red I would guess an infection had set in and this may be the results of all that, I am not a medically skilled person, get a hold of someone that is.
Best of luck,keep us posted

YES you hit the nail on the head.  No, nobody recommended any acid reflux meds. I took tums this morning when it happened. didnt work.  I did head out to my recliner around 5am,just woke up. NO acid reflux but I cant sleep in my recliner forever and I also havent eaten or drank anything. I am SO thirsty. I am always scared to drink.

I do have a pcp, at innovis here in fargo. Of course, its sunday. Id have to go to the er. Im heading to my moms in jamestown today. Almost tempted to head to urgent care at innovis first.

thanks!

Just saw your post, hope everything is ok, however, if you have not done anything as of yet, here is my opinion!
I am not a DR.... however, PLEASE call Dr. Smith before you go to your PCP at Innovis.  I had a stricture, called Dr. Smith at the hospital (on a Sunday morning mind you), he took my call personally, had me in for a scope Monday morning.  Due to the pain, I did go to urgent care at Innovis... NOT a good idea... big run around just for pain meds.... I should have driven to Park Rapids!  Urgent care is not trained to help bariatric patients... an emergency yes, but bariatric issues no!  After my scope, I was also a bit inflamed so Dr. Smith prescribed 1 month of Prilosec (I think)... that helped ALOT!

Good luck to you!
Amy

No one has recommended prilosec or anything and its really torking me to be truthful. Sad when I know what will help me. Im at my moms right now in Jamestown and I just started using her prilosec. It has helped a lot, until last night. I had another bad night.  Burping up that bitter, rotten taste again.

I actually wish I had never had this surgery. WHY cant I heal correctly? I was scoped last Friday and it didnt do anything, but irritate the inside of my inicision. It "burns" if I move incorrectly, cough, laugh, etc. Its FRUSTRATING. I wouldnt be a good person to recommend this surgery to anyone. I realize I had to have it open that causes more issues, but this is ridiculous.

Between a fever since surgery, that keeps getting higher*that no one is really concerned about*, my pain issue and the reflux, I tell you what......

You can buy prilosec over the counter. I was giving it by RX much cheaper LOL and I took-1 cap 2 times a day for 2 months then once a day for 4 months. They are 200 mg each.
The generic name is : Omeprazole.(Most likely covered by your insurance).

It takes months for your body to heal, you may think it is healed on the outside but inside is not. Most people that have had issues after surgery have buyers remorse. I was one of them!. I would not have recommended it to someone I hated even. When asked at 6 months out, my answer and attitude had changed. It has given me a better quality of life etc.. You will get there, have faith!!

Best of luck, keep us posted

My mom was saying it was cheaper by prescription too.  Im waiting to hear from park rapids. I had another test done the other day, had to drop samples off at clinic. They have no idea about my fever.

I asked PR to send for an rx to the clinic. She was waiting for the dr to get in today to see what they can do.

I think going back to work april 6 is going to be interesting.  :( Uffda. I have a desk job but my part time job is at a coffee shop. My supervisor is very aware I can not lift anything over 10 so....that eliminates me for most anything but taking orders.

I get such like hunger pains but hate to eat.....afraid of that reflux. Ive only had applesauce today. I was put back on phase 2 of diet due to the test last friday. Im back to phase 3, forkable foods now. Just no desire to try anything new. It seems if I try something new, I get horrible stomach cramps while my stomach digests it.

Back to having my water....thanks for the extra tips Kelly/Tink. I need it!

Hope you get some answers soon. I would watch it with the apple sauce too. Apples have an amount of acid in them and that might irritate it more, maybe not I am not sure. I would stay with mild stuff for now. Have you tried cottage cheese, SF puddings, mashed taters, mashed veggies, soggy bran flakes, yogurt, tuna mashed/mixed good,baked/re-fried beans, pureed chili if spices were ok, There are a few items that might set ok for you. I think the key tho is going to be prilosec lol
Have a wonderful day!

After my scope last week with Wroblewski, they put me back on step 2, however, today I can go to step 3 and Im excited. FORKABLE FOODS:) Mom is making us walleye for supper. Im not a good fish cooker so thats where mom comes in*ha* I had tried tuna before my scoping and it worked good. I LOVE fish, tuna, etc so no problem there. im even thinking braunschweiger for protein. As weird as it sounds, I love that stuff too and its def mushy!  Cottage cheese works awesome. I need to get more, maybe run out after mom gets home today.  She baked a yam earlier. I think Ill try that, too.  Yogurt, I didnt find much in fargo with little sugar. I found a kemps one in park rapids that has 8 grams. The other day i bought activia here in Jmst and that works good too. I open the prilosec capsule and put it in there to take.  You are making me hungry now, which is probably a good thing:)

Thanks for the tips Kelly. I appreciate it.

Where are the support groups? When? Is it Rachel Rudel?*sp* I am not fond of that lady so I may have a hard time going to groups she runs.

Glad you are able to have a variety of soft foods. Was worried you had only branched out to one item LOL.
Fish is good,I find it easy to bake, but that is me. High in many things we need.
Braunschweiger-all my life that stuff has looked nasty. I had kind of forgotten about it. Maybe I will buy a small chunk of it and try it out. Tastes have changed since surgery and I now look at foods differently. Mushy was not on my list prior, now it is a way of life lol.
I use yoplait yogurts. That is what was recommended by my NUT, I have not had a problem with it at all.

There are 2 support groups.

The one at Meritcare is the last Tuesday of the month at either 630 pm till 730pm. I can't remember. I attend this one every month. It is in the Auditorium in hospital on Broadway.

The one at Innovis is the 3rd Monday of the month from 6pm to 730- Lower level of hospital by the fountain. I attend this one every month too.

I do not know of that name you mentioned. Meritcare  is Becky. Innovis is Kathi.
If you plan on going to any of the meetings, let me know I can buddy up with you so you don't feel odd coming the first couple of times. Everyone at both groups are nice/friendly and we are all there to support each other and share ideas.

Have a wonderful dinner/eve
Kelly
