I am back from Mexico...
I walked and walked and walked - we were at a huge resort on the Mayan Riviera South of Cancun, so it was wonderful being outside and walking. I suspect I got a ton of exercise without even realizing it...
At any rate, gone 8 days to an all inclusive resort with no scale - I am down 2 lbs. Mind you, not trying to lose any more, but had visions of gaining at this vacation.
Glad to see the message board getting more action. Hope everyone is doing well.

To the world you are just one person, but to one person you are the world.
I just have to ask you about the renewed/ strengthened travel alert for violence in Mexico. My best friend, who supports my getting the DS, though always leery about going to Mexico for it (she's a RN, she just can't help herself!), positively flipped out on me for not cancelling. I won't go into all of the ensueing dramatics, but suffice it to say that we were both quite upset.
How was your sense of it since you were just there? I've read the warnings & recommendations from the US Consulate, but what is your take on it since you were there?
I'm sure you've heard already, but you just missed another COLD snap - lucky, lucky!

1. Play Del Carmen - shopping for a late afternoon/evening. We saw what appeared to be a mexican army truck driving through the streets with semi-automatic weapons. That kind of freaked me out, but never felt unsafe.
2. Taxi ride to Playa - on the highway, there were checkpoints that people had to stop at. It was the "Policio" - police officers holding what my DH said were semi-automatic weapons - not like the handguns we see our police carry. We were fine - but we talked to some people at the resort who got into Cancun late at night, so there transportation to the resort was at 2:00 a.m. They were pulled over by the cops or someone and all of their things gone through. They were fine and were told by their driver they were likely looking for drugs.
Aside from that, I noticed nothing and felt completely safe. It is very apparent that these businesses in mexico are doing all they can do to keep the tourists safe, as that is the bread and butter of this country. We didn't leave the resort much, but when we did, there was security at the entrance/exit of the resort and everyone had to be checked in and out (via room number).
Where in Mexico are you going, and when is your surgery? Yes, it was pretty warm (80-85 degrees) but whimpy me was still cold at night. Since losing weight, I just can't get a handle on my body temperature.

Glad to hear there's extra measures being taken & that everything went well for you & DH. I'll take the trade off of body heat for less blubber! I'm getting really excited!!!

You're not flying into Phoenix and driving to your destination in Mexico, are you? Part of my job at work is to research dangerous places where we don't want employees to go to, and the information I get is about the cities just on the other side of points of entry in the US.
Driving through El Paso is the worst, right now, but driving through from Arizona and California is full of warnings as well. The issue is the drug cartels are doing kidnappings/hostage takings and robberies of Americans who come through as well as European tourists. Much of this is retaliation for the extensive security at the US border not letting the drugs and dealers come through, cutting off their revenue stream. I hated to mention this to you, but its a real issue you need to be aware of. The US State Department has a warning out at the colleges and universities for the spring break crowd at the resorts in Mexico. I know a couple of people who have just come back and said the resorts are well protected, it can be getting too and from the airport and into the villages surrounding them that are questionable. Check with your local contact at the doctors office to see if they can advise of any precautions you should take.
I thought I would edit this to add a link http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html this was added by the State Dept on 2/20/09
