Topic: Friday Roll Call
Hi all,

Well, as I expected my 90 day review put me out the door but not completely.  I am on an "on call" basis which means they do see some value in me.  I can do outreach stuff and handle busy times in the club.  I just am not a salesperson.

Today, I'm not sure what I am up to.

Topic: Back in the hospital again
I'm back in the hospital once again. I was doing really well. I had already gone back to work, I was eating regular food and keeping it down and then all of a sudden on Sunday evening, I took two bites of grilled chicken and became violently ill. Since Sunday it's been constant vomiting and constant pain on my right side. I went to the ER Tuesday night and they loaded me up with pain meds and sent me home. Yesterday, I followed up with my doctor who took one look at me and sent me right away to the ER for fluids because I was very dehydrated. In the ER this time, they did an ultrasound and determined that my gallbladder is very inflamed and infected so it has to come out today. They kept me overnight and it  will be getting removed at 12:00 today.  I'm a little discouraged because I'm scared this is just the beginning of declining health. Other than being overweight, I've been a healthy person. I've never had surgery before the RNY and now it seems like my body is falling apart. I'm also not particularly keen on having my surgery on Friday the 13th, but oh well.

Just needed to vent.

Topic: Thursday Roll Call
Hi all,

Wow, time flies these days.  I thought it was Wednesday.  Normally I work but was told to take the day off.  My co-worker and I are wondering what is going on.  No one is really talking to us.  I don't get it.

Well, the job hunt continues with Richard.  He has a tentative offer for the job in VA.  I am hoping that IF he gets an offer, there will be money for the expense of two rents.  He has applied to jobs locally also.  It will be interesting to see how all this falls.

Today is recycling, vet store, groceries, post office and work.  Thursday night into Friday is always hard but after work on Friday, the weekend begins!

I hope you all have a great day!

I have found them almost like a tool box. Often, when I find myself off track, there are nuggets of information there that help me refocus. One of the things that I did in terms of using the list that she has you create in the front was to put each of the 'reasons' on a separate 3x5 card. I found that for me they fell into 4 categories, so I have them in the box that way. For me the break down into the following areas: Health, Quality of Life, Appearance and Self Esteem. I found the list just too overwhelming to really be valuable to me, but I pull one card from each category each day and then when I'm taking a shower I think about them and what I want/need to do to support those things. It's made it more tangible and effective for me.

Here's a list of many of the other books on my 'bookshelf':

The pre-op surgery requirements vary from one surgeon to another. What many surgeons want us to recognize is that the surgery is not a quick fix, but part of a set of tools we put into place. For some surgeon's they not only want to see the benefit of the shrinkage of the liver, but also your commitment to the process. Remember that the surgery is going to help you immensely as you work to strip off the excess weight, but studies have shown that the amount of weight you lose and your ultimate long-term maintenance of that weight loss is tightly keyed to the lifestyle changes you make. Please don't misunderstand me. Many people can lose the weight, or some of it, without the surgery, but we can't get it all off, much less keep it off. I honestly do not believe that I would have been able to get the weight off without the surgery and I really do not believe that I would be approaching my 5 year anniversary, still slender if I hadn't had the surgery. That said, it wasn't 'just' the surgery. It was a combination of the surgery and other skills/tools I developed that have led to my short and long-term success. Think of this 30 lbs weight loss as the beginning of your metamorphosis, not an impediment to it.

I know that it will be challenging, but it is not the futile exercise it has been for so many years. Instead it is the beginning of lifelong changes that will allow you to realize the quality of life and health you desire and deserve.

There is a book that I often recommend to my support group members that are struggling with the issues with which you are struggling. It might help, the book is The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck and it comes as a book and workbook. It's not a diet, but a way to try to look at where you are, where you want to go and provides tools to help you get there.

Wishing you all the best,

Barbara

Hi and welcome,

Well, they just what they are.  I decided to do that because this board would be dead if someone didn't do something every day.  It's just something I do.

Hi I'm new to this forum.  Can I ask what are all the role call postings ?  That's the majority of what I see in the group.
Thanks :)

 Hi All ,
I'm going through the pre-op part of WLS .  All I have to do according to my surgeion is lose 30 lbs.  I'm having a terrible time with this.  Did your surgeons make you lose before havign surgery ? I understand doing the 2 week liquid diet before surgery to shrink the liver. But if I could lose 30 lbs I don't feel like I would even need the surgery.  Are any of you near me ( Sneads Ferry ) ?  What doctors did you use ? I'm working with Dr.Harris .

Topic: Not moving after all..

As many know, my husband and I have been looking into, and were strongly considering a move to CA to be closer to our adult sons and their wives. While being able to be closer to our sons and their wives is still a desire, it's not something that we will be doing for the next couple of years.

I'm sharing this to let you know that I will continue to lead the support groups Raleigh. Of course, we will continue to have our monthly general support group and I will see about resuming a number of the special interest groups that I have also run, such as

  • Grads group which focuses on the concerns of those who have entered the maintenance phase of their journey
  • Over 50 which focuses on the issues particular to those who start with very high body mass indexes
  • Making Changes, which as formerly known as the Beck group based on Judith Beck's book entitled The Beck Diet Solution which is looks at and addresses behavior issues associated with emotional eating

I welcome your input and any suggestions that you may have to make the support groups an even more valuable resource to those considering WLS, those who are in the midst of their weight loss, and those of us who have reached our maintenance phase of our journey.

I look forward to your input and to seeing you soon at an upcoming meeting.

All the best,

Barbara
