Topic: Is it the weekend yet roll call
Hi all,

I hope your week is going well so far.  Today is the dentist and dress alteration.  Getting down to the wire before our trip out to CA for the wedding.  It would be awesome if we got our stuff before then.  My hubby has informed me that he wants me to look sharp and that I'm starting to dress frumpy.  I told him I don't have much of a choice since 98% of my stuff is in storage.  Hmmm, do you know if they make sundresses with built in bras?  Hubby wants to know if I would look good in a sundress.  HAHA, I told him with my flappy arms and......, not so sure lol.

Have a great day all!

Topic: Surgery Date Scheduled for 06.07.11
My name is Zan and I have been preparing for surgery since the end of February and I had my initial consult on 04.18.11.  Well,  initially I wanted to have DS...  My BMI is 45 so I knew that it was going to be a fight with BCBS-NC (State Health Plan.)  My partner had RNY in January of 2009, so I knew a lot about RNY.  I was concerned about not being able to take NSAIDs after surgery.   I have arthritis and crushed my foot in 1990 and have severe tendon and nerve damage.  I talked to Meghann, Dr. Sudan's administrative assistant today.  She told me at least 2 others had been turned down at the 1st and 2nd appeal.  Wow!  Guess, I initially thought I had a chance at DS.
I began to have doubts about DS for me when I read so much about DS (vitamins 3X/day, having to eat, etc.)  I hate making myself eat now because I am hypoglycemic.  Often times I don't want to eat and I know I have to eat properly or try, every 3-4 hours or I will pay.  I take vitamins and supplements regularly but 3X/day!!!   Well, after talking to Meghann I decided that I did not want to battle BCBS only to wait and possibly never get approved for DS.  I remember an article I read that discussed a patients attitude as the key to success with WLS.  Plus my PCP had just told me there were other ways to manage my pain.  Meghann even had Dr. Sudan look at my chart in between our phone calls and he said that I had options and may be able to take certain NSAIDs.  Well, I have recently begun praticing mindfulness and decided I was going to remain positive in this situation also.
So, I told her I would have the RNY and my surgery date is set for 06.07.11.  I am now nervous, which is out of character but I am glad to have my date.  I am also thankful for OH and all of you who so gladly share you ups, downs and all with all of us here.  Hopefully, I will make some of the upcoming groups because I look forward to meeting each of you that are close by.
Well, enough rambling...  Thanks again to each of you because I may not post but I do read.
I am  sure that what is meant to be is what has happened and I am ok with the change.  Now on to the next 22 days between now and surgery!!!!!

Wow! That is fantastic. I hope you are proud of yourself. My surgery isn't until 6/3 so it is a wonderful gift to have your post - at 5 years out - right now.

Topic: Spring Clean your Body!!!

Ayy yo,

Want to baby your liver?  Keep your GI tract fit?  Flush out toxins?  These 10 foods can spring clean your body and keep refreshing your vital parts all year 'round.  No need to fast.  Just take these three steps:

"Eat clean," avoiding processed foods and chemical additives.
Stay well hydrated by drinking lots of filtered water.
Include some of these 10 foods in several meals throughout the week.

The Detox Top 10

1. Dark green leafy vegetables.  Eat them raw in a salad or boil the crap out of 'em like your favorite grandma used to do when you were a kid for Thanksgiving dinner. Throw them into a broth, steam them, and mix with rice or add to an omelet, or puree them into juices.  The chlorophyll in greens helps swab out environmental toxins (like heavy metals, pesticides, and other undesirables).  It's also an all-around liver protector, which your liver needs since it's your major domo detoxifier and the main reason you haven't passed out in the street after a long night "hoisting 'em and tossing 'em" back last weekend.

Lemons.  Remember the old neumonic for learning the human body parts we learned as kids - "Milk, milk, lemonade, round the back fudge is made..."  Well...  maybe you didn't grow up east of Sesame Street like I did but, fresh lemonade made with filtered water (i.e. non-tap) will keep you hydrated, and its vitamin C helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that's easily flushed away.

Watercress.  Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches and eat them with your pinkies extended like you're at the now defunct Tavern on the Green or the posh Four Seasons restaurant.  Those peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps the flushing process.  Plus cress is a mineral gold mine, rich in iron, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.  Now you can feel pretentious and snobbish as you also detoxify your "culo" all in one shot.

Garlic.  Add it to everything -- salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the heart-friendly bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes.  Research also indicates that garlic diminishes a process that creates cancer-causing compounds in your body.  ***Be warned though*** -After consuming large quantities of garlic it will ooze out of your pores and cause you to smell a lot like that guy that no one wants to sit next to on the bus.  Everything in moderation.

Green tea.  This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more water into your system.  Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity.  Be mindful not to drink Extra Sweet Green tea or any variation thereof with a high sugary/syrupy/high fructose corn anything content unless you plan to look forward to blurred vision and diabetes amputations with a crooked smile on your face in the near future.  Diet green tea is my recommendation.

Broccoli sprouts.  These little tree stump looking buggers pack 20 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the actual grown-up vegetable.  Research suggests that eating the sprouts (they have a radish-like taste) kills off H. Pylori bacteria that causes stomach irritation and ulcers.  Just what the doctor ordered when you want to sweep your bottom chimney free of all the soot.

Sesame seeds.  They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that's a staple of Middle Eastern cooking.

Cabbage.  These taste great but while they boil on the stove cooking they will leave your house smelling FUNK-KAY!  There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver, and this potent veggie helps activate both of them. It's the largest member of the Brassica veggie family, all of which delivers colon-cancer fighting isothicyanates and vitamin C.  Coleslaw, anyone?

Psyllium.  This plant's bursting with soluble fiber, which mops up toxins (cholesterol, too) and helps clear them out.  Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast. (Start with a small amount and gradually increase your dose as your GI tract becomes used to it.) Drink it down quickly or it WILL turn to gel on ya like an 8th grade science experiment if you don't.  Don't make a big jug of it and put it in the fridge for later.  You'll be angry that you can't get any of that goop to come out of the jug after sitting too long.

Fruits, fruits, fruits.  They're full of almost all the good things listed above -- vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and assorted antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, perfect pear, or fresh berries. Just make sure that you take an extra pair of drawers to work with ya if you plan to eat these for breakfast all week.  And for Godsakes don't trust your farts or a sneeze.

I don't like panic attacks early in the mornings.  It is also hard to confess when a lot of it is caused by my own actions.  I did a good soul cleansing.  No the problems aren't solved but I am acknowledging them.  I am so glad you all are here.  Oh, there are tons of lurkers out there just reading and absorbing.  I guess us vocal ones are keeping your interest lol.

Today I see the vet about sparkle.  She needs a $570 test and we don't have it.  We need to find out what is going on with her heart.  I also have to find us a doctor and dentist.  Hubby is off today which is nice.

I hope you all have a great day!

You are going to be great!!!  It is very daunting to have any surgery, and you wouldn't be normal if you didn't have a little of the nervousness you're having.  When you get nervous, take a deep breath and close you eyes.  Then, think of the happiest memory you have, or a special trip you took, or your loved ones faces, or just say a prayer.  That always helps me.
I cant wait to hear how you're doing, and in a week I'll be e-mailing you for reassurance!!  You can do this and it is going to be sooo worth it.  Hang in there!!  Be very proud of yourself for doing this.  And I bet you would be surprised if you leaned on your husband he would probably give you a great big hug and tell you he's proud of you, too!!
I will be thinking of and praying for you for the next week.  Go get 'em girl!!!!

Topic: Surgery Day Tomorrow
I can't believe my surgery is tomorrow.  I've been kinda of anxious all day.  I'm trying to hide it from my husband and son.  The clear liquid diet today hasn't been too bad.  I keep thinking you will have to eat like this the next couple weeks. But hopefully, I won't have the hunger like I do now.

I know this is the right decision for me.  I just want to get through the next couple days and get back home.  I've never had surgery so I'm not sure what to expect.  But I know I will survive.  Wish me luck and say a prayer for me.
