Attn. Dr. Baumans Patients !!!! Question ????
Does anyone know why Dr. Bauman makes his patients wait 2 weeks to eat any soft foods ??? I'm one week out and feeling great and getting all my liquids and proteins but today I'm hungry !!! Did anyone else have that problem ??? How did you deal with it ??? I see so many people that come home on a soft diet and I know Doc Roc does it for a reason but does anyone know what that reason is ???
Rhonda
Rhonda,
Dr. Roc does not require a 2 week pre-op liquid diet like a number of surgeons--each is different, but most require at least 2 weeks of liquids at some point. He believes that the pouch needs two weeks to heal. Also, you need protein to heal and you would not be able to eat enough protein in the first two weeks to support adequate healing and energy levels. Stick with it. The two weeks will be over before you know it. Try adding sugar free popcicles or adding some peanut butter to your protein shake, as it is more substantial than just a protein drink made with water or milk alone. Also, when I was on liquids, I "ate" a lot of broth. I would make homemade chicken veggie soup for my family and then strain out the pieces & just eat the liquid. This tasted like food, and somehow eating with a spoon felt like eating too.
It will be over soon!

Hey Rhonda,
I know EXACTLY what you're going through. I felt so good at a week out that I wanted to try new foods, but don't do it. Just wait it out. Just imagine how you would feel if you wound up back on the operating table because of something you ate! I agree with Roberta -- stock up on SF popsicles. You can make it -- and it gets sooooo much easier ever single week!
Good luck!

(down 65 pounds in 10 weeks)
Hi Rhonda,
I'm always late answering people on here! The others pretty much said it all, like Roberta said, Dr. Roc believes we need time for our pouch to heal. Remember those staples need to heal so nothing will come apart later. Revisions are no fun I hear and usually not covered by insurance. I was more than ready for my soft solids at the 2 week post op time, but the protein drinks kept me full, I just had the head hunger. Diane (our nutritionist) gave me a whole sheet of protein shakes/drinks to make, some with peanut butter and some with fruit. They were great, email her or call her for them. I made the chocolate peanut butter protein shakes and put it in little 2 ounce containers and froze it. That was my treat every night! I still use peanut butter with chocolate protein shakes or lowfat milk with nestles no sugar added powder. You can do this, just remember how far you've already come. Dr. Roc has an awesome track record with little to no complications with his patients post op. This is one of the reasons. Good luck!

-125 lbs and still going down
Hi Rhonda,
I don't know if your checking the boards today, but I wanted to tell you, I went through this. I went ahead and picked up some canned soup and ate the broth with a spoon. I didn't eat the contents. I was fine in the hospital but when I got home, it was so small in here and everything looked good. I didn't give into temptation.
You will be loving eggs and soft foods, just count down the days like I did. I agree SF popsicles and the receipies from the office nutrionist are the best remedies. I survived and so will you.
Remember, this is all for a purpose. I'm almost 9 weeks now, down 45lbs and so happy. I really eat just a smidge more since I hit 8 weeks. I haven't had one problem either, I skip the s tarches. Right now, I'm loving the few pieces of fruit I can eat. Haven't tried salad yet.
Good Luck were here if you need us.

One more funny thing, I work in a huge corporation, there are probably 100's of people each day that I pass their desk or vice versa, I always want to snatch the junk and throw it out. I've never acted on it, but i've wanted to..
