So I am 24 years old and currently a student still on my mother's insurance. I haven't been to the doctors in some time, but I decided it was time for me to lose some weight and looked into the lapband. I attended a seminar, and made an appointment only to call United Healthcare and be told she had an exclusion from her employer's plan. So my next idea was Medicaid which come to find out that bariatric surgery has been completely wiped out for North Carolina. My BMI is almost in the 70s and I don't know what to do. Anything dealing with weightloss is excluded from my mother's plan and I have no idea what options I have. I was thinking of buying insurance but I have no clue how that works, and if I did buy insurance I would still have to find one that doesn't have crazy deductibles, no exclusions, and affordable. As I said I haven't been to the doctors in years so there is no paperwork saying that I am moribly obese or suffer from anything like diabetes. Any ideas?

WOW sounds like a hard place to be in, I am sorry your having a hard time getting the finances for surgery. With a BMI in the 70's you will most likely need to lose some weight before you would be approved.  Maybe you can use this time to do weigh****chers or a sensible diet ( I know it is difficult) so that when you are finished with school you can find a job with good insurance that would cover weightloss surgery.
The only other option is paying cash out of the country, but still very expensive.

I don't have the answer but I feel for you and hope you can find a way to become healthier.

You might want to look into other surgeries besides the lapband as well. LapBand and Realize bands have the highest failure rate out of any weight loss surgery. I am not saying this to scare you but just thought you might like to know. There are more options than the lapband or realize band systems. You Have Roux-en-y aka Gastric bypass, Gastric sleeve, duodenal sleeve (some surgeons will not do this one but you can check into it anyhow), and of course the lapband. Just please please please do plenty of research before you make a definate decision. And please also remember tha WLS of any kind is a tool and not a fast fix to any problem.
