It is not quite true that Medicaid no longer covers bariatric surgery. They are suspending coverage and the date that they suspended the coverage is October, 1, 2010. However, if you have already met with your surgeon by July 1, 2010 and have your 6 month medically supervised weight loss attempt completed, I'd still pursue it. According to the NC Dept of Medical Assistance August 2010 Medical Bulletin, if you were already working with your surgeon you may be able to pursue the surgery because if you started with them before July 1, 2010, submit the request for approval and get it approved by November 30, 2010 and have the surgery by December 31, 2010 they will cover it. Here's the link to the information from the NC DMA.

I hope that you fall into that category.

I can't speak specifically about Medicaid, but I can tell you what I did when my insurance wouldn't cover WLS. I made a plan! My husband's insurance wouldn't cover WLS so he started looking for another job that had insurance that did cover it. It was a process and it wasn't easy, but in the end I'll have my WLS and be on the road to a new life.

You're young! Do what you have to do to make this happen for yourself. You can do it!
