Question...

I am new to this whole thing since I just had my surgery on the 30th of August.  My question is about weightloss rate.

At first.. I was sailing right along.. at my 2 week post-op appointment last friday.. I had lost a total of 35lbs. But here it is a week later... and I havent lost anything since!

Surely I didnt go through all this for a mere 35lb weight loss,... right????

I'm a little bummed thinking that I am going to fail at this too..... and nervous that I am doing something wrong!

I just had my RNY on 8/4/10 and like you the 1st two weeks, the weight was melting off, BUT....  we were on total liquids then too.  We've since added in some soft/pureed/regular food so it's normal to hit the 3-4 week slow down.  The same has happened with me.  I know it will start up again and that we haven't done anything wrong as long as we are getting in our protein, water and exercise.  Don't panic.......  We'll BOTH make it!

35lbs the first 2 weeks is fantastic.  I am out almost 8 weeks and have only lost about that.  You will lose but it slows down and will get very frustrating.  I have never heard of a surgery that did not work.  You will read all over the forum how people stall all the time but then they lose.  I am now only weighing myself once a week because I was getting too frustrated looking at the scale and did not want to everyday being mad, so now I weigh Mondays and am only made once a week.  Just kidding, I wish they never invented scales as I like to see the difference in the way my clothes fit more than a weight on the scale.  you will not fail so do not even think that, you will be a success and look forward to all the things that are going to change as you lose weight.

I also think that you are doing great!  I had my surgery on 8/9/10 and have lost 29 pounds so far.  Most of my weight came off the first 3 weeks and since then I've slowed down.  I sometimes have the same concerns as you but don't worry your doing really well.

Hi Jamie,

It's very NORMAL for this to happen, but so is your reaction. I had the same reaction when it happened to me. This generally happens to most people somewhere in the first 2 to 6 weeks and can be really unsettling, but my surgeon explained to me this way. He said that our bodies are set up to detect and defend us in case of famine. Your body thinks that famine has set in and is using all of it's resources to retain all of it's fat reserves. Thank goodness our surgery can outlast our body's need to retain our reserves. He said that while we would like to see our weight loss come off as though we were sliding downhill, it actually stair steps down, so you can expect to see a drop, then a stop, then a drop, then another stop. This can be un-nerving, but when you know that it's normal, it seems to make it a little easier. If you look at my profile, you will see that I blogged about having the same experience and while it was unsettling and sometimes made me worry that I wouldn't lose all of my excess weight, you will see by looking at my avatar and/or other photos on my profile, I lost all of my weight. I'm sure that as you stay with the program, you will do just fine too.
