Just a quick question

My Mom had lap band on 9/1/10.  Her MD said she needed to stay on a liquid diet of protein and water/crystal light until her 3 week follow up.  (She will be about 4 weeks post op when she has that appt.)

She stayed on the liquid diet for a couple of days, but since then, she has been STARVING.  She started tasting food on spoons like mashed potatoes or stewed squash but now is even eating meat and veggies.

Is this normal?  Is the reason why she is able to eat is because she hasn't had a fill yet?

I'm having lap rny on 10/25 and I hope this isn't how I will feel afterwards.  Or is it?

I can't speak for everyone, espically since I had regular bypass.  See with ours the nevers are cut and we have a honeymoon period of about 6 months where things just don't taste the same and we really don't want it.  Now my sister in law had lap band and she had to stay on liquids for 4 weeks out and was starved.  A coworker also had lap and she is hungry to.  The band doesn't take your appitete away just room for all that food.  Some people though aren't as hungry and you do find for the most part you can't eat what you thought you wanted.  This is the reason I didn't do lap.  Now my nevers have all reconnected and everything taste good again for the most part.  Regardless off what you do it is a life change and TWO things...1 You must follow the doctors rules to be a success, don't start out doing your own thing.  It's not easy by and stretch.   And 2 no matter what you do weightloss wise, what goes in must go out, meaning there is no way around it YOU HAVE GOT TO EXERCISE.  If you ignore both you may lose weight but you will gain it back in the long run.  You'll figure out how to eat around the band.  Most people come out without a fill from the start because it is restrictive, how much they fill mostlikely will depend on how much you are losing and how you are handling it.  Just my opinion and experiance.

The gastric bypass or RNY is known to cause an interruption in the hormone Ghrelin that is responsible for driving our hunger responses. When you have a lapband that doesn't occur and some people report issues with hunger while they are own a liquid only diet. It is very, very important that you follow the dietary guidelines provided by your program. You can ask them if they can suggest a protein that can help you feel satisfied, but I would strongly suggest that you not try foods that have not been 'cleared' by your dietician. Ask Patrick or Liz about what they suggest and let them know of the experiences that your mother has had and your concerns.

While many who have not yet had a fill feel some significant restriction, some do not.

You may want to cross post your question to the LapBand forum to see if others can share their experiences with you.

Wishing you all the best,

i did clear days 2 and 3 then full liquids for a couple of days and then soft food. That included things like soft veggies and some sandwhich meat.

She will be hungry for awhile. It can take from 6 months to a year to get restriction.  I hope when you say she is eating meat you are not meaning like chicken, steak. That makes the stomach move and they don't want this because the want the band to settle in

Tamara

I will be having a revision on October 8th and am hoping to not have the hunger I have felt with the band

Yes, she is eating chicken, bacon...don't think she has tried steak.  I think because she doesn't FEEL a difference yet she thinks it's ok.  I told her that she needs to follow her doc's orders bc there is a reason behind them.  What you said scares me and I will be sure to pass that on to her.  Thanks!  PS.  Hope everything goes well for you on the 8th!
