Do what is right for you and don't worry about whatever example your friend may be setting. That friend has to live with their consequenses and you yours. Yes it really is that simple. Good Luck!

You didn't say if she was 9 days, weeks, months or years out. Different people will handle this issue in different ways. Some will never test the waters, most will to some extent or another at some point. Either way, you are early in this journey at I would really suggest that you do all that you can to allow yourself the maximum opportunity to enjoy the most benefit you can realize from the surgery you worked so hard to get. You have about a year to 18 months of time to lose the weight, erradicate some seriously bad habits, and lay the ground work to help you maintain the new healthier body you are moving towards. Your new, smaller stomach will help to protect you if you leverage it, but it can only work if you work it. If you sabotage it with high calorie liquids, slider foods, and crunchy carbs, you will run the significant risk of undermining and eventually undoing all the good that the RNY can and will do for you.

Please don't misunderstand me, I do indulge, but it is with awareness and accountability. It takes time to develop both.

BTW... re: carbonated beverages are often painful for those who are newly post op as the carbonation expands in your tiny, swollen pouch. Many people, myself included, can 'tolerate' carbonation, but don't like the way it feels even a few years post op, so I tend to forgo sodas. I can't drink enough to enjoy the satisfaction of them anymore and that's probably a good thing because they are so laden with calories that add up too fast and too easy.

You might want to consider getting a book and workbook called the 'Beck Diet Solution' which may help with the behavior management stuff. I've found it to be very helpful.

Wishing you all the best,

Barbara

I'm 3 years post op and have not had any carbonated drinks.  I had a real craving for a diet Mt. Dew a couple weeks ago so I bought some in the 16 oz bottles, opened one and let it sit over night in the fridge wtih the top loose so the fiz would decrease... well, even then it was still too bubbly and felt horrible in my pouch...  so, no sodas for me!
